Strong First Half Sparks Field Hockey to Victory Under the Lights

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Four first half goals fueled the Kutztown University field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Seton Hill University Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game under the lights at University Field.

The Golden Bears (3-2, 2-1) have won two of their opening three conference games and are off to a strong start to the season.

Anna Behm (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) needed just three minutes to find the back of the cage and get Kutztown out to an early lead. She was fed a perfect pass from Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) in front of the cage and beat the Seton Hill goalkeeper with the ensuing shot for a 1-0 lead.

Behm scored twice on the night and leads KU with eight goals this season, tying her career-high from her freshman year. However, she scored her eight goals in 2012 in 17 games, whereas she needed just five games this season to hit the mark. She is also tied for second in the PSAC in scoring.

Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Micaela Beaty (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) each scored their second goals of the season on Wednesday night. Madison Wampler (York, Pa./West York Area) sent a deflection pass to Konowal for her assist, and Jess Strohecker (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) and Skyler Oates (Morristown, N.J./Madison) worked together on a penalty corner to each tally assists on Beaty's goal.

Seton Hill came out strong in the second half with a goal 1:17 into the half to push the Golden Bears back on their heels. The defense held on its own for the next 25 minutes before allowing the final goal of the night with eight minutes to play on a rebound in front of the KU cage.

Kayla Denlinger (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) picked up her first win of the season with three saves on the night. Defender Rayann Fink (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) was active on the backline and picked up her team-leading third defensive save of the year.

Alesha Herman and Dominique Cappello scored for Seton Hill, who falls to 0-3 on the year.

Kutztown embarks on a three-game road trip, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Mansfield University, the alma mater of KU head coach Marci Scheuing, who will look to lead her team to victory after a 5-3 setback last season.
