Kutztown 6, Sciences 3 (HTML Box Score) NCAA Regional Rankings (4/23/14) PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team got off to a slow start after dropping three doubles matches, but found its rhythm and swept all six singles matches to win a 6-3 final on the road against the University of the Sciences on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (14-5) opened the afternoon by learning they were ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Atlantic Regional poll. It was the final regular season poll of the season as seven Atlantic Region teams will earn a postseason bid. Kutztown will be competing for one of four at-large bids.
The first three doubles matches did not fare well for the regionally-ranked squad. All three matches were close (6-8, 6-8, 7-9), but Sciences earned all three narrow victories.
Singles play was Kutztown's strength in the regular season finale.
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) earned straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Matthew Maguire picked up a tiebreaker win after dropping the first game 3-6. He rallied with 7-5 and 6-0 wins at No. 3 singles.
Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) pulled out a tightly-contested fourth-flight of singles with 7-6, and 6-3 wins.
Patricio Hernandez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Vista Hermosa) and
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) won in straight sets to round out singles action.
The Golden Bears (14-5) had their final tune-up of the regular season, and now await the decision of the NCAA selection committee to learn if they will compete in the NCAA Tournament. The field will be announced during the NCAA selection show on Tuesday, April 29 at 8 p.m. on www.NCAA.com.
