HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Kutztown University men's and women's tennis team wrapped up its spring break trip to the PTR Spring TennisFest on Friday with matches against the University of Pikeville. The men's side dropped a tight 5-4 decision, while the women cruised to an 8-1 victory.
Both KU squads ended the week with four wins and one loss. Against Pikeville, the men's team suffered it's second loss this year (6-2) and the women improve to 4-4.
The women lost a point to Pikeville at No. 1 doubles, but won by default at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles slots.
In singles,
Hannah Pipkin (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) (1),
Chelsea Davis (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) (2), and
Erika Diffendall (Mountville, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) (3) all won their singles flights in straight sets. With the match decided, Pikeville defaulted on the final three singles matches.
On the men's side,
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) were the only Golden Bears to grab a win in doubles. Teamed up in the No. 1 doubles match, Amin and Desai took down Sven Rodenbusch and Dmitry Babenkov, 8-4.
Amin and Desai were also victorious in singles competition. Amin defeated Babenkov 6-1, 6-4 at No.1 singles and Desai bested Rodenbusch in a super-breaker at the second singles slot (2-6, 7-5, 10-6).
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) was the final Golden Bear to grab a win at No. 6 singles (6-1, 4-6, 10-7), but it was not enough as Pikeville took the points from the third, fourth, and fifth singles matches to win 5-4.
The women's squad will open conference play March 25 against Shippensburg University on Keystone Courts. The men's team will have to wait until March 28 to take on Millersville University on the road.
