HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team got one more match in on Saturday to conclude the PTR Spring TennisFest, sweeping Benedict College 8-0.
The Golden Bears (7-2) won the first two doubles matches and the third by default. In singles, Kutztown earned four victories, won one by default, and had an unfinished match be halted due to rain.
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) teamed up for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles and
Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Matthew Maguire were triumphant at No. 2 doubles (8-4).
Desai, Lichtenwalner, and
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) were all straight-set victors in singles at the No. 2, 4, and 5 spots. Amin was up 6-1, 3-0 at the top singles flight until his opponent retired due to injury. Maguire dropped the first set 4-6 at No. 3 singles, but was leading 4-2 in the second before the match was ceased.
The Maroon and Gold will begin conference play on March 28 against Millersville University on the road.
