ERIE, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team concluded a 2-0 start to the spring season with a 9-0 sweep against the Mercyhurst University Lakers in a Pennslyvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match on Sunday at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie.
 
Kutztown (2-1) was victorious in all three doubles matches and all six singles matches on the way to a 9-0 win. The Golden Bears only dropped two sets throughout.
 
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) cruised to an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) teamed up to win 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. Matthew Maguire and Ken Beebe (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) rounded out the doubles competition with a close 9-7 win at No. 3.
 
Amin dropped the first set to Travis Beck at No. 1 singles, but rallied back to take the second set 6-3 and the super breaker 10-5. Desai, the PSAC singles champion, handled Robert Rizea 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Maguire and Patricio Hernandez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Vista Hermosa) secured straight set victories at No. 3 and 4 singles against Daniel Gimenez and Eric Drusko. At No. 5 singles, Lichtenwalner dropped the first set 2-6 to Ross Molinaro, before taking the next two 7-6, 10-6. Nace rounded out the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mike Vinopal at No. 6 singles.
 
The Maroon and Gold will be out of action for almost a month until March 28, when they face Millersville University at Millersville at 2 p.m.
