ERIE, Pa. – The Kutztown University men's tennis team kicked off the spring season with a 6-3 victory in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup against Edinboro University at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.
Kutztown (1-1) started the day with two points from doubles play.
At No. 1 doubles, PSAC champions
Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) teamed up to take down Matias Aignasse and Juan Sebastian Estepa (8-3). At No. 3 doubles, Matthew Maguire and
Ken Beebe (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) handled James Cooper and Thomas Pellegrino (8-2).
Rich Lichtenwalner (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) dropped a tight 8-9 match at No. 2 doubles.
The Golden Bears took four of the six singles matches to secure the 6-3 team victory.
Amin dropped the first set at No. 1 singles, but rallied to take the second set 7-6 and the super breaker 10-4. Desai, who was also the PSAC singles champion, took down Estepa 6-1, 6-3.
KU's No. 2 doubles team split up to grab wins at No. 5 and 6 singles. Lichtenwalner won his match 6-2, 7-5 and Nace was victorious in the final singles match (6-3, 6-2). Maguire and
Patricio Hernandez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Vista Hermosa) suffered straight-set defeats at No. 3 and 4 singles.
The Maroon and Gold remain in Erie tomorrow, Mar. 2 to take on Mercyhurst University at 10 a.m.
