KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team has a chance to clinch a playoff berth on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game at Keystone Arena. Tipoff was pushed back to 3 p.m. due to expected weather conditions on Saturday morning.
Saturday also marks Kutztown's annual Play4Kay game to raise awareness of breast cancer research. KU's men's and women's teams will both be wearing Play4Kay shoot-around shirts and additional promotions will be made at Keystone Arena. Kutztown will also honor three breast cancer survivors in between the women's and men's game. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
With a win and a Lock Haven loss at Mansfield, the Golden Bears (8-14, 5-7 PSAC East) can clinch a spot in the PSAC Championship Tournament.
The Maroon and Gold got into this spot after putting together its best offensive output of the season in an 86-72 win against Cheyney on Wednesday. The Golden Bears shot 32-of-61 (52.5 percent) from the field, marking a season-best shooting percentage. They lost the first meeting against the Marauders, 65-64, at Pucillo Gym.
PSAC PLAYOFF PICTURE: Kutztown currently holds a 5-7 record in the PSAC East, ranking the team sixth in the division. With five teams already clinching a playoff spot, the Golden Bears need to stay ahead of Lock Haven to earn the final spot in the East in the PSAC Championship Tournament. The Golden Bears can clinch with a win and a Lock Haven loss on Saturday, or they can beat Lock Haven outright on Wednesday. Kutztown can get no higher than the three seed, as West Chester owns a 12-1 conference record and Bloomsburg stands at 10-2 in the PSAC East.
LAST TIME OUT: The Golden Bears scored their most points in a game this season, winning at Cheyney, 86-72, Wednesday night at Cope Hall. Kutztown dominated offensively from tip-off, and the team poured in 50 points in the first half. It was the most in a half since last year's win in the first round of the PSAC Championship Tournament (50 in second half v. West Chester). It was also the best first half scoring output in six years (53 v. PSU-Berks on Dec. 8, 2007). Five players scored in double digits, and the team collected 23 assists on its 32 field goals.
APPROACHING 300: With Wednesday's win, head coach
Janet Malouf earned her 298th win at Kutztown. In her 20th season, she stands two wins away from a career milestone that 39 active Division II head coaches reached in women's basketball. A three-time PSAC East Coach of the Year, Malouf coached Kutztown to its three winningest seasons in program history.
STATISTICAL ADVIA-TION: The production this year from junior forward
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) soared impressively. She earned the program's first ever triple-double, including a school-record 10 blocks on Dec. 7, during the team's first game against West Chester. She also has three seven-steal games this season. Campbell averages 10.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.9 steals (PSAC-best) and 2.5 blocks (second in the PSAC) per game this season.
MRS. RELIABLE: Through her three years at KU, junior guard/forward
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) started 74 consecutive games and counting. With that, she's become one of the main focal points on offense. Her 10.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game both rank second on the team, behind
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape). Her four double-doubles co-leads the team (with Campbell). Bonenberger shoots 40.2 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the line.
BEYOND ELEMENTARY: Freshman forward
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) put together one of the best weeks as a Golden Bear, scoring a co-season-high 19 points against Mansfield last Thursday and eight points at West Chester on Saturday. As a result, Watson earned honors as PSAC East Freshman of the Week for the first time this year. Watson is providing more than basic contributions as a freshman, averaging 8.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Looking in the Other Corner: the Millersville Marauders
STELLAR SHOOTING: Sophomore guard Celeste Robinson is making the most of her time on the floor during her second season. She ranks fifth in the PSAC (and first among guards) with her 54.7 percent shooting from the floor. The efficiency helps Robinson to a 13.1 points per game average. In the first meeting against KU, she scored 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
BATTLE TO THE LINE: Junior guard Carly Gallagher ranks fourth in the PSAC with 148 free throw attempts. As a result, Gallagher averages a team-best 14.5 points per game. Shooting 73.6 percent from the line, Gallagher gets 34.3 percent of her points from the charity stripe. Gallagher scored 18 points in the meeting against Kutztown, going 6-of-8 from the line.
HEY THERE, COACH: Marauders head coach Mary Fleig is in her 23rd season as head coach at the university. Fleig's teams own a 17 consecutive season streak with an appearance in the PSAC Championship Tournament. Fleig has 564 wins overall as head coach, including 442 at Millersville. In her tenure, MU made the NCAA Tournament nine times.
