CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team posted a season-high scoring output in a 86-72 victory at Cheyney University's Cope Hall on Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game.
The Golden Bears (8-14, 5-7 PSAC East) remain in sixth place in the Eastern Division, and can clinch a playoff berth on Saturday with a win at home against Millersville, combined with a Lock Haven loss at Mansfield. However, Mansfield is still looking for its first win of the season. For Kutztown, it would be its second straight playoff appearance and fifth in the last six years.
Kutztown dished out a season-high 23 assists on 32 field goals for the game. It shot a season-high 52.5 percent from the field including 62.5 in the first half.
Five players scored in double figures for the Golden Bears. Redshirt junior
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) led the way with 18 points, followed by freshman point guard
Jess Harvey (Barnegat, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional) with 16 points on an effective 7-for-11 shooting from the field. She also had a season-high six rebounds and four assists.
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. She also had four assists and three blocks. Sophomore
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) rounded out the quintet with 11 points, five assists and five rebounds.
Freshman forward
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton), this week's PSAC East Freshman of the Week, put together a solid all-around performance with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Kutztown got off to a hot start and led by as many as 25 points in the first half (34-9). It shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half (20-for-32) and scored its most points in a first half this season to lead Cheyney 50-26 at halftime. Kutztown tallied 16 assists on 20 field goals in the first half, and surrendered just four turnovers.
Cheyney posted four players in double figures for the game, led by Lachelle Miller with 19 points including five three-pointers. Kia Whitley-Duncan and Kyra Hines-Allen each scored 15 points, and Amber Genwright finished with 10. Cheyney shot 36.9 percent from the field.
Saturday's tipoff between Kutztown and Lock Haven is set for 1 p.m. at Keystone Arena. Kutztown will hold its annual Play4Kay game to raise awareness of breast cancer research.
