COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The nationally-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team won two of its three matches at the Terrapin Duals on Sunday afternoon, with its only loss coming at the hands of Division I opponent and the host of the tournament, the University of Maryland.
The Golden Bears, ranked 13th in Division II, earned victories over Johns Hopkins (44-6) and Alderson-Broaddus (40-9) and earned 10 points against Division I Maryland in a 35-10 loss.
Senior heavyweight
Ziad Haddad (Orefield, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic (North Carolina)) went 3-0 with two victories by pin, both of which were under a minute. He recorded his fastest career fall in the Johns Hopkins match with his victory coming in 16 seconds. It is tied for the sixth-fastest fall in school history. Haddad pinned the Alderson-Broaddus heavyweight in 57 seconds and earned a 15-2 major decision against Maryland's heavyweight.
As quick as Haddad's fall was, it was not even the fastest fall of the day. Redshirt freshman
Collin Schildt (Thurmont, Md./Catoctin) pinned Johns Hopkins' 197-pounder in 10 seconds, one second shy of tying the school-record.
Senior
Andre Petroski (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (Bloomsburg)) opened his career in the Maroon and Gold with a 3-0 start. A transfer from Division I Bloomsburg University, Petroski tallied two falls and a major decision in Sunday's success. His fastest fall came in 1:19 against Maryland.
True freshman
Travis Roper (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) won two matches at 133 by bonus points. He earned a win by fall in 5:32 and a lopsided 20-0 tech-fall against Alderson-Broaddus. Sophomore
Matt Benvenuto (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) also won two matches including an 18-second fall against Alderson-Broaddus, tying former Golden Bear and current assistant coach Kriss Belanca for 10th-fastest in school history.
2014 national qualifier
Bo Candelaria (Reading, Pa./Middletown) won two matches by major decision, in which he allowed one combined point against him. 174-pound freshman
Brandon Wolfe (New Castle, Del./Delcastle Technical) also won two matches.
The Golden Bears take next weekend off and return to competition on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the East Stroudsburg Open.
