Kutztown 8, Saint Thomas Aquinas 1 (HTML Box Score) KUTZTOWN, Pa. – An early three-match lead through doubles play led the Kutztown University men's tennis team to an 8-1 victory over Saint Thomas Aquinas on Monday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at the Keystone Courts.
All three of Kutztown's doubles team remained undefeated on the season. Freshmen
Gabriel Nogara Souza (Curitiba, Brazil/Dom Bosco) and
Joan Oliver Perez (Andratx, Spain/IES Baltasar Porcel) moved to 3-0 on the year with an 8-6 win at the top flight of doubles.
Matt Maguire (Centurion, South Africa/Tuks Sports School) and
Indi Reverte (Zaragoza, Spain/Santa Maria del Pilar) won their second match together with a tight 9-7 win, as senior duo
Varun Desai (Mumbai, India/K.C. College) and
Ken Beebe (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) turned in an eight-point sweep at the third set of doubles.
In singles action, Desai led the Golden Bears with matching 6-1 victories at No. 1 singles. He has now won 93 combined matches at Kutztown.
Oliver Perez pulled out a three-set win at No. 3 singles. He opened with a 6-4 win, and rallied from a second-set setback with a 10-8 win.
Filip Lagerqvist (Sundsvall, Sweden/Skvaderns Gymnasieskola) also won in three sets at the fifth flight (6-3, 4-6, 12-10).
Indi Reverte (Zaragoza, Spain/Santa Maria del Pilar) and Nogara Souza each allowed one point in their matches to round out the Golden Bear victors.
Kutztown closes out its fall schedule on Friday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. against Roberts Wesleyan College at the Keystone Courts.
