Sluggish First Half Plagues Golden Bears in Setback to Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team made five field goals in the first half which put it in a 18-point halftime deficit it could not overcome in a 66-51 loss to Lock Haven University on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game from Thomas Fieldhouse.
 
Saturday was the first divisional meeting between the Golden Bears (6-10, 3-3 PSAC East) and the Lady Eagles (4-12, 2-4), as Lock Haven is playing in its first season in the East.
 
Kutztown's field goal percentage and Lock Haven's points off turnovers told the tale of the first half. Kutztown shot 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) and saw Lock Haven score 17 points off of 14 KU turnovers as Lock Haven led 32-14 at halftime. It is the lowest scoring half for Kutztown since 2004.
 
The second half was much more competitive, as Kutztown outscored Lock Haven 37-34, but was unable to cut the deficit to single-digits at any point. For the game, Lock Haven won the battle of the boards with a 44-28 rebounding advantage.
 
Two players scored in double figures for Kutztown. Junior Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scored 15 points on an effective 6-of-9 shooting from the field. It is her fifth consecutive game scoring in double figures. She also had eight rebounds with two blocks and two steals.
 
Fellow junior Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) chipped in 11 points with seven rebounds and a team-leading three assists. It snapped her streak of consecutive games with double-digit rebounds at three, but she has still grabbed seven or more rebounds in an impressive five straight games.
 
Sophomore Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) finished with nine points and a team-leading three steals, as eight different players scored in double figures for Kutztown. However, the team failed to make a three-pointer for the first time this season.
 
For Lock Haven, Sami Lane led three double-digit scorers with 16 points. Emily Dougherty had 14 points and Kelsey Ryan finished with 11. Leading the rebounding battle for the Lady Eagles was Hannah Gildea off the bench with 11, four of which came on the offensive end. Marrysa Moyer had nine rebounds with eight points, and Lysa Mealing grabbed eight boards.
 
Kutztown closes out its three-game road trip on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Shippensburg University (10-6, 4-2), who is currently tied for second place in the Eastern Division. Tipoff at Heiges Field House is set for 8 p.m.
