BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The 13th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team completed its second weekend sweep of the season and allowed one combined run to Bloomsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field Saturday afternoon. KU won the opener 3-1, and the nightcap 2-0.

The Golden Bears (22-5, 11-1 PSAC) are on a five-game winning streak and have won 16 of their last 17 games. They sit in first place in the Eastern Division and are off to their best start to a season since 2007 when it went 25-2 in its first 27 games, and finished the season 19-1 in conference play.

GAME ONE

Kutztown took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) hit his first triple of the season to score fellow junior Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) to plate Kutztown's first run. Senior Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) knocked in Stoudt the following at-bat.

Junior Jordan Gottshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) started on the mound for KU and kept Bloomsburg off the board until the third inning. With one out, the Huskies got an extra-base hit from Pete Edgar and an RBI single from Tim Ravel to cut the lead to 2-1. Gottshall struck out two batters in the inning to get out of the jam and keep KU in the lead.

Gottshall was relieved in the fourth after allowing two batters to reach base. Senior Jordan Garcia (Mount Carmel, PA/Fleetwood) took over on the mound and forced a popup and struck out the final batter of the inning to keep Bloomsburg off the board.

Senior Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) took over for Garcia in the fifth, and allowed just one hit in the final three innings, earning his first save of the season. Garcia moved to 2-0 on the season with the win.

Gottshall finished with a season-high five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Offensively, Kutztown needed just six hits for the victory, two of which came from Stoudt. Stoudt also drove in a game-high two RBI.

Bloomsburg's A.J. Stump went 3-for-3 at the plate, and pitcher Casey Cooperman pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and no walks.

GAME TWO

The starting pitchers were dominant in the nightcap as the game was scoreless through five innings. For Kutztown, Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) pitched a season-high 5.2 innings and allowed just four hits with three strikeouts. He retired the first eight batters he faced.

Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) gave Kutztown a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. With Hauck on third, Romano laid down a bunt and made his way safely to first base as Hauck took off for home and scored.

Senior Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) relieved Shimo with two outs and a man on second base in the sixth inning. He forced an inning-ending groundout as KU held a 1-0 lead heading into the final inning.

Sophomore Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) gave the Golden Bears an insurance run with an RBI single to score John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)).

Neely hit two batters in the seventh, bringing on James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) to pick up the save. Rossi forced two groundouts to end the game for Kutztown's fourth shutout of the season.

Eric Geedy pitched a complete game for Bloomsburg, allowing four hits with five strikeouts and four walks.

The Golden Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 9 for a non-conference doubleheader against Lincoln University set to begin at 1 p.m. at North Campus Field.
