MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore catcher
Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) hit a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the fifth inning of game two to cap a five-run inning to lift the 12th-ranked Kutztown University baseball team to a 6-3 win in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader against Millersville University. Kutztown dropped the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener at Marauder Park, 5-1.
The Golden Bears (23-8, 12-4 PSAC East) won one of the four games over the weekend against the Marauders (27-10, 10-2). The teams remain in the top two of the standings in the East and could see each other again in the postseason.
Tied at 1-1 in the fifth of game two, Kutztown tallied two base hits to open the inning and put two runners in scoring position with one out.
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) gave KU a 2-1 lead with an RBI single through the left side to score
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn).
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) had one of his three hits of the game in the next at-bat to score junior
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) to give KU a 3-1 lead.
Peters came up next, pinch-hitting for
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville), and cleared the bases with his three-run bomb to left field. It is his second home run in as many days, and he is the only Golden Bear with two home runs this season.
Millersville responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth with two outs off a sacrifice fly and groundout to score runs.
Kutztown pitcher
Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) picked up his fourth win of the season with five innings of work. He allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out four batters while walking none.
Jordan Garcia (Mount Carmel, PA/Fleetwood) kept the Marauders scoreless in 1.2 innings on the mound. He did not allow a hit and notched one strikeout. Fellow senior
Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) took over with two outs in the seventh and struck out the final batter of the game.
Kreitz went 3-for-4 at the plate, his first multi-hit game since Mar. 24. Senior
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) also finished with a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
In game one, Millersville jumped over KU starting pitcher
Jordan Gottshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township) with five runs in the first inning. A pair of extra-base hits gave Millersville a 3-0 lead, as a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch accounted for its only other runs of the game.
Kutztown scored one in the second inning with a bases loaded walk, but was plagued by leaving the bases loaded in each of the first three innings.
Kutztown's bullpen kept Millersville off the board following Millersville's big first inning. Senior
Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one hit, as
Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) and
James Rossi (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each had scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Bears.
Millersville's Chris Murphy improved to 9-1 on the mound and picked up the win. He pitched 5.2 innings and struck out six batters.
