KU-SU Series Statistics
HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team ran its winning streak to 11 games, the programs longest since 2010, but saw the run come to an end as Kutztown split its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with 14th-ranked Shippensburg University at Metro Bank Park, home of the Harrisburg Senators. KU won the opener 7-3, but dropped the nightcap 8-2.
The Golden Bears (17-5, 7-1 PSAC) won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division series after it swept the Raiders (17-8, 4-4) on Friday at North Campus Field. Kutztown sits in second place in the East behind Millersville University (4-0 PSAC East), who only played one PSAC series thus far.
Sophomore outfielder
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) led the Golden Bears at the plate in the doubleheader. He combined to go 5-for-7 with two runs scored. Senior catcher and fellow North Penn High School graduate
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) also had a strong day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Albaugh has reached base safely in 16 straight games.
GAME ONE
Kutztown led from start to finish in game one. Junior
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) gave KU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single to center field to score Martinez, who led off the game with a double down the left field line.
The lead stretched to 3-0 as junior shortstop
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) hit a two-run, two-out single up the middle to score
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) and Albaugh.
Junior left-hander
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) shut down the Raiders in the first four innings. Along with holding Shippensburg scoreless, Holmes allowed just one hit through four innings with no walks. His first flaw came in the fifth inning as a pair of Shippensburg doubles plated its first run of the game. A wild pitch by Holmes followed by an RBI single cut the Golden Bears' lead to 3-2 after five.
Albaugh and Kreitz opened the sixth with back-to-back singles. Senior
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) moved the runners over with a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt, and a throwing error by the Shippensburg first baseman scored Albaugh from second.
With two outs in the sixth, sophomore
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) and was followed by a RBI single by Martinez to plate Rubendall and give KU a 6-2 lead.
The teams traded runs in the seventh with a Shippensburg fielding error to score KU's run, and a leadoff home run by Cody Kulp in the bottom of the seventh closed the scoring in the opener. Following the home run, freshman
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) replaced senior
Jordan Garcia (Mount Carmel, PA/Fleetwood) on the mound for Kutztown and struck out two batters in the final inning.
Holmes improved his season record to 2-0 with a career-high five innings on the mound. He allowed four hits and did walk any batters. Martinez and Albaugh both went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead KU's offensive attack.
GAME TWO
Martinez and junior
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) each had multi-hit games for Kutztown in the nightcap. Despite the team letting up eight runs, Kutztown relief pitcher
Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) was Kutztown's most effective pitcher. He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two hits and no runs. Wing has not allowed a run while giving up three hits in 7.1 innings pitched this season.
Like it did in three of the four games this weekend, Shippensburg jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Pat Kregeloh hit a three-run home run that rang off the left field foul pole to build the lead to 3-0.
Kutztown responded with runs in the second and third innings to cut the deficit to 3-2. Shurr hit an RBI in the second, and Hauck connected on an RBI single to right field in the third to score Martinez, who led off the inning with a triple.
Shippensburg rattled off three straight singles in the bottom half of the third that led to two sacrifice flies to give the Raiders a 5-2 lead through three. It tacked on two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to earn its lone win of the series.
Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) was tagged with the loss for Kutztown. He allowed five runs in three innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Nick Massetti picked up his first win of the season for the Raiders. In four innings, he allowed six hits, two runs, and three walks while striking out four.
The Golden Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 3 when they host Adelphi University for a single game beginning at 3 p.m. at North Campus Field.
