MANSFIELD, Pa. – Junior pitchers
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and
Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) of the Kutztown University baseball team shut down the Mansfield University hitters on Sunday and helped guide the Golden Bears to victories of 3-1 and 7-1 and complete the weekend sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.
Holmes picked up the win in game one and pitched 4.1 innings while allowing one earned run. Shimo started in game two and did not allow an earned run in 4.1 innings while striking out a season-high five batters.
At the plate, junior
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) combined to go 6-for-7 in the doubleheader and help the Golden Bears extend their season-high winning streak to seven.
The PSAC-opening weekend marks Kutztown's (13-4, 4-0) first 4-0 start to PSAC East play since it won the first eight games in 2009 with sweeps over East Stroudsburg and Mansfield. It was also the last time Kutztown swept Mansfield.
GAME ONE
Two of Mansfield's four hits in game one came in the first inning. With one out, Seth Tressler singled to right field, stole second, and was knocked in the following at-bat on Matt Fisher's single to give Mansfield a 1-0 lead.
Kutztown tied the game in the second off a sacrifice fly by
John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)), scoring
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) who singled to reach base.
Senior
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) led off the third inning with a triple and went on to score the go-ahead run off an RBI by
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn). Hauck also had an extra-base hit in the inning and scored off Albaugh's double with two outs to give Kutztown a 3-1 lead.
The Golden Bear pitching staff held onto the lead for the remainder of the game. Holmes pitched into the fifth inning and was taken out after letting up two base runners with one out. Senior
Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) took over for Holmes and not only got out of the inning and picked off a base runner, but did not allow a hit in the final 2.2 innings to pick up his first save of the season.
Hauck went 3-for-4 in the opener to lead KU at the plate. Albaugh and Rubendall also had multi-hit games for the Golden Bears.
GAME TWO
Mansfield struck first in the second game as well. Shimo kept the Mountaineers off the board for the first three innings, but allowed an unearned run in the fourth inning off a throwing error on the Kutztown third baseman with two outs.
Kutztown responded with a wild fifth inning that plated seven runs off four hits and three Mansfield errors. With runners on first and second, Rubendall hit the ball to the pitcher, who threw the ball far above the first baseman's glove and into the bullpen. Two runs scored on the play to give KU a 2-1 lead.
Two batters later, Hauck placed a perfect drag bunt to score Rubendall from third. Following a single by
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights), Albaugh placed a sacrifice bunt in front of the Mansfield catcher. Instead of throwing Albaugh out at first, the catcher tried to tag Martinez trying to score from third, but missed the tag.
Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) had an RBI single in the inning to score Stoudt and bring an end to Mansfield pitcher Joey Zuniga's day on the mound. Dockins scored with two outs on an error by the shortstop, and
Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) knocked in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.
Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) tried to score from first on the play, but was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
The game calmed down from there as Kutztown pitchers
Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) and
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) did not allow a hit in the final 2.1 innings.
Shimo threw 4.2 innings and struck out a season-high five batters. Hauck was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and combined to go 6-for-7 on the afternoon.
The Golden Bears' doubleheader on Monday, March 25 at Felician College has been cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather. They will return to action on Friday, March 29 for a doubleheader at home against Shippensburg University beginning at 1 p.m.
