WILSON, N.C. – Junior Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) hit a game-winning, bases-clearing triple in the 12th inning to seal the Kutztown University baseball team's 12-8 victory over Barton College Wednesday afternoon at Nixon Field in Kutztown's final game on its spring break trip.

The teams entered extra innings tied at 7-7. Kutztown's Joe Peters (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown (Delaware Technical CC)) reached on a hit by pitch to start the 12th inning. Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) and John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) each singled to load the bases with no outs. Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) gave KU the lead with an RBI single to score Peters with one out.

Following a pitching change by Barton, Kutztown's Hauck cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right center field to build the lead to 11-7. Hauck went on to score from third on a two-out single from Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) to give Kutztown a five-run, 12-7 lead heading into the bottom of the 12th.

Sophomore pitcher Dave King (Tremont, PA/Minersville) took over for Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) in the 12th on the mound. He let up one run off a one-out RBI double, but never let Barton bring the potential game-tying run to the plate to secure the victory for Kutztown.

The 12-inning affair was the longest game for Kutztown since 2011 when it went 15 innings against Barton.

Shimo picked up the win with two innings of relief. He retired all six batters he faced and notched one strikeout. Jordan Gottshall (Birdsboro, PA/Exeter Township), Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville), and Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) also did not allow an earned run for the Golden Bears.

Hauck and Martinez led KU at the plate with multi-hit and multi-RBI games.

Kutztown struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) led off the game with a double to left field. After being sacrificed over to third by Hauck, Gorrell scored on an RBI single from Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) to give KU the 1-0 lead.

Barton also used a leadoff double to score its first run. It put two runners in scoring position to start the inning as the two runners scored on a sacrifice and a groundout to give Barton a 2-1 lead.

Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) opened the third inning with his first career home run to tie the game at three.

Kutztown's four-run fourth inning broke the game open. Martinez knocked in the first with an RBI single with the bases loaded and no outs. Martinez also stole home in the inning. Gorrell also had an RBI in the inning to give KU a 7-2 lead through five innings.

Barton fought back and scored one run in the sixth, three in the seventh, and one in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7.

The Golden Bears return to action for their home opener on Saturday, March 23 to take on Mansfield in a doubleheader at North Campus Field beginning at 1 p.m.
