Baseball Topples Builders

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. – The Kutztown University baseball stayed undefeated in the Builder Invitational, picking up its second win in as many days with a 5-2 win over the tournament's hosts, The Apprentice School.

Carson Baker (Lehman, PA/Lake-Lehman (Lackawanna)) drove in two runs and scored another to lead Kutztown with a 2-for-4 effort.

After Apprentice scored in the bottom of the first, Baker had RBI singles in both the third and fifth innings to give the Golden Bears the lead.  Baker knocked in Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) to tie the game in the third, then made it 2-1 with an infield base hit that drove in Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) in the fifth.

Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) and Thomas Romano (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) gave Kutztown breathing room with run scoring hits in the sixth and seventh innings.  Gorrell singled into centerfield and drove in John Dockins (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson (Frederick CC)) for a 3-1 lead.  The next inning, Romano sent a ball through the left side of the infield to plate Baker.

A wild pitch scored a run for Apprentice in the eighth, but Kutztown stretched the lead back to three runs in the top of the ninth when Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) doubled in Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights).

Albaugh went 2-for-3 in the game with a double, a walk and an RBI.  Dockins walked twice. Stoudt and Romano each had a hit and walk.

Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) picked up the win, scattering two hits and four walks in five innings and allowing just an unearned run.  Brandon Shimo (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland (Lackawanna)) pitched two scoreless, striking out four.  Jordan Garcia (Mount Carmel, PA/Fleetwood) allowed an unearned run in the eighth and Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) struck out two in a scoreless Apprentice ninth.

Kutztown continues play in Hampton, Virginia at the Builder Invitational with games against both Briarcliffe (N.Y.) and Bloomsburg on Saturday, February 23.
