IUP Game Notes
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team looks to close out its 2013 half of the season with a win over the red-hot Indiana University (PA) Crimson Hawks when it returns home on Saturday, Dec. 21 for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game starting at 1 p.m.
IUP (8-1, 2-1 PSAC West) received votes in the latest Top 25 poll, and the Crimson Hawks lost their only game by one point. Meanwhile, Kutztown (5-4, 2-1 PSAC East) looks to bounce back after its PSAC crossover road trip ended with a 72-70 loss at Pitt-Johnstown. In the defeat, KU overcame an 18-point deficit, including an eight-point margin in the final minute. However, UPJ won the game with two free throws in the end. The Golden Bears are 5-2 in their last seven games.
LAST TIME OUT: One day after a win in Clarion, the Golden Bears lost the second half of their PSAC crossover road trip. Despite overcoming an 18-point deficit in the second half, the Golden Bears lost 72-70 to Pitt-Johnstown. Kutztown overcame its slow start with a 13-0 run to bring the game within five points. UPJ built the lead back 70-62 in the final minute, but Kutztown tied the game after showing great D and three-point shooting. After the tie, the Lady Cats found an open player to draw a foul. The ensuing two free throws with 17 seconds left made the difference.
STATISTICAL ADVIA-TION: The recent production from junior forward
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) soared, and that shows both on tape and in the stat sheet. As a result, the PSAC named her East Co-Athlete of the Week for Week 4 (12/2-12/8). During the week, against Mansfield and West Chester, she totaled 25 points, 22 rebounds, 14 steals, 13 blocks and five assists in two games. For the season, Campbell averages 9.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
STEALS APLENTY: With 10 steals last time out, the Golden Bears continued a recent trend of frequent legal theft. The Kutztown defense totaled 83 steals over the last six games (13.8 steals per game average), including a school-record 22 at Mansfield on Dec. 4. Kutztown last recorded double-digit steals in six consecutive games in 1998 (twice, 1/7-1/24 and 1/31-2/14, spanning 12 of 13 games). The team averaged 11.8 steals over that 13-game span.
CARDIAC CUBS: The Golden Bears are no stranger to late-game heroics this season. KU won thrice after a go-ahead bucket in the final minute, including two in the final 10 seconds.
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) hit the game-winning free throws with five seconds left against the University of the Sciences on Nov. 20, while
Jess Harvey (Barnegat, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional) scored the go-ahead three-point play with seven seconds left in the victory over East Stroudsburg on Nov. 23. Unfortunately, those late-game heroics cannot be a normal outcome. With the loss at UPJ, KU owns a 2-2 record in games decided on its final possession.
MRS. RELIABLE: Through her three years at KU, junior guard
Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) started 61 consecutive games and counting. With that, she's become arguably the biggest focal point of the offense. Her 11.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game both lead the Golden Bears. She scored in double digits in seven of nine games this season.
SO FRESH: Freshman guard
Jess Harvey (Barnegat, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional) recently put notice to the PSAC of her offensive ability. With 32 combined points against Mansfield and West Chester, Harvey was named PSAC East Freshman of the Week for Week 4 (12/2-12-8). Harvey scored 16 points and added four assists in two games so far this season.
ABOUT INDIANA (PA) CRIMSON HAWKS
TOP 25 ASPIRATIONS: The Crimson Hawks earned 28 votes in the most recent poll from the USA Today Sports DII Top 25. After a 6-0 start, IUP reached number 25 on the poll, but its one-point loss at Seton Hill knocked them back out of the Top 25. Every win by the Crimson Hawks this season came by double digits.
STAMP OF APPROVAL: Junior guard Lindsay Stamp is the only Crimson Hawk to average double-digit scoring, but she leads the PSAC with 21.1 points per game. She scored at least 20 points in each of her first seven games, and "cooled down" a bit with 15 points against Millersville and 14 points against Shippensburg. She shoots 48.7 percent from the floor.
