KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team hits the courts once again as it travels to face Clarion University on Tuesday, Dec. 17, and the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Both tipoffs are set for 5:30 p.m.
This marks the first crossover trip of the season for the team, and neither game will count towards the teams' divisional record. The Golden Bears (4-3, 2-1 PSAC East) last played on Dec. 7, when their four-game winning streak came to end after an 83-81 loss to West Chester.
Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) set a school record with 10 blocks in the defeat.
LAST TIME OUT: Three days after the Golden Bears set a team single-game record for steals, a new individual single-game record hit the record books. Campbell blocked a record 10 shots en route to the program's first-ever triple-double in a thrilling 83-81 loss to West Chester on Dec. 7. For the game, Campbell totaled 11 points, 15 rebounds, 10 blocks and seven steals. Also, freshman guard
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) fell just one shy of a school record after hitting six three-point field goals. Her 23 points marked the most by a freshman since Tricia McElmoyle (26) in 2005-06. Altomare was fouled on a three-point attempt in the waning seconds with a chance to tie the game at 83.
STATISTICAL ADVIA-TION: The recent production from Campbell soared, and that shows both on tape and in the stat sheet. As a result, the PSAC named her East Co-Athlete of the Week for Week 4 (12/2-12/8). During the week, she totaled 25 points, 22 rebounds, 14 steals, 13 blocks and five assists in two games. For the season, her 3.7 steals per game ranks third in the PSAC, and her 2.4 blocks per games ranks second.
STEALS APLENTY: With 12 steals last time out, the Golden Bears continued a recent trend of frequent legal theft. The Kutztown defense totaled 63 steals over the last four games, including a school-record 22 at Mansfield on Dec. 4. KU totaled at least 12 steals in each game, marking the first four-game streak with 12+ steals since 2000 (1/29-2/5). Kutztown last recorded double-digit steals in five consecutive games in 1998 (six, 1/7-1/24 and 1/31-2/14... 12 of 13 games).
SO FRESH: Freshman guard
Jess Harvey (Barnegat, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional) recently put notice to the PSAC of her offensive ability. With 32 combined points against Mansfield and West Chester, Harvey was named PSAC East Freshman of the Week for Week 4 (12/2-12-8).
CLARION GOLDEN EAGLES (2-4, 1-2): Led by forward Hannah Heeter, the Golden Eagles come into this week's crossover with a chance to get back to .500 with wins against Kutztown and Mansfield. Heeter returned to the Clarion basketball program after completing the volleyball season. She scored 11 points and 16 rebounds in her season debut last Saturday against Wheeling Jesuit. The Golden Eagles are struggling with their three-point defense. Their opponents shoot 40 percent from beyond the arc and made 58 three-point field goals in six games. The percentage ranks dead last in the PSAC.
PITT-JOHNSTOWN MOUNTAIN CATS (3-5, 2-2): After a 1-5 start, UPJ won its last two games. The Mountain Cats are struggling with their interior defense, but defending well against the perimeter shots. Their opponents shoot 46.3 percent from inside the arc, but only 28.1 percent from three. On the flip side, UPJ makes 9.9 three-pointers per game on offense. The team shoots 36.4 percent from three. Five players average double figures, led by the 15.9 points per game from Kayla DeCriscio and 14.5 points per game from Kelsey Sleighter.
