SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team suffered a straight-set defeat to East Division leading Shippensburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup on Friday night from Heiges Field House.
The Golden Bears (12-17, 6-12 PSAC) battled the Raiders (24-7, 16-3) to a five-set showdown at Keystone Arena earlier in the season, but were unable to get anything going on Shippensburg's home court.
The Raiders got off to a hot 14-3 lead in the first set. KU was able to bring it back within seven, however, Shippensburg closed out the set 25-17 behind Jill Edwards' four kills and two aces.
Shippensburg took control at the onset once again, rushing out to a 13-3 lead in the second set following a seven-point Abby Mummert service run. SU would take the set 25-8.
The Golden Bears fought to an 11-11 tie in the third, until another Mummert service run gave the Raiders the momentum. Edwards served three straight service aces to close out the third set and the match, 25-14.
Danielle Van Buren (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) was the leader of a rather dull offensive effort for Kutztown, knocking down six kills. The Golden Bears recorded a season-low 17 total kills throughout the match.
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) led the defense with nine digs, while
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) contributed 17 assists and six digs.
Edwards, the PSAC leader in kills, led the Raiders with 13 kills and five service aces, while Taylor Gottshall added 10 kills.
Kutztown will need to bounce back quickly, as it ends its six-match road spree with a 1 p.m. contest at Millersville University tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 9. Currently sitting in sixth place in the East Division, the Golden Bears will need some key victories over their last four matches to secure a playoff spot.
