LANCASTER, Pa. – During the finals of day two at the Franklin & Marshall Invite on Saturday evening, the Kutztown University women's swimming team notched finishes in the top four rankings across four events, reaching career-bests and improving school records.
FINALS
In the finals of the 50-free, junior
Caitlin Davies (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished fourth with a career-best time of 24.82 to move up from seventh on KU's All-Time Top 10 list to fifth.
Davies also took third in the 200-free finals, finishing in 1:57.79, while senior
Elizabeth Metz (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) (1:59.03) followed in seventh.
Senior
Natalie Carr (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) seized the silver in the 200-breast finals with a career-best time of 2:33.60, raising the bar from her eighth place ranking on KU's All-Time Top 10 list in the event.
Grabbing the bronze in the finals of the 100-fly, junior
Jessica Bleiler (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) finished with a mark of 59.58, followed by
Zoe Sianis (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) in sixth at 100.97. Junior
Melanie Felkner (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) reached a career-best time in the event with a mark of 1:03.63.
Kelli Sheatsley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) finished ninth in the 400-IM finals with a time of 5:03.44.
PRELIMINARIES
The Golden Bears swam in the preliminaries Saturday morning, advancing 11 swimmers to the finals in multiple events, reaching personal-bests, and earning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-qualifying times.
Junior
Caitlin Davies (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) qualified for the 50-free, finishing third in the event and improving on an existing PSAC qualifying and season-best time of 24.97, just one one-thousandth of a second shy of her career-best time in the event (24.96).
Improving on their career-best times and also qualifying for the finals in the 50-free were
Vicky Ceasar (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) and
Rachael Burke (Barnesville, Pa./Mahanoy Area), who finished the event in 26.90 and 27.21, while
Samantha Scialpi (West Pittston, Pa./Pittston) was the fourth Golden Bear to qualify for the finals in the event with a mark of 27.16.
In her second bronze finish on the day, Davies reached a career-best time in the 200-free, earning a sixth place ranking on KU's All-Time Top 10 List in the event, beating her existing PSAC-qualifying time with a mark of 1:57.33.
Senior
Elizabeth Metz (Rosemont, Pa./Radnor) also earned a PSAC-qualifying time in the 200-free, for her third event this season. She finished in 2:00.17, good for seventh overall.
Jessica Bleiler (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) grabbed the silver in the 100-fly with an existing PSAC-qualifying and season-best time of 58.67 to succeed to the finals. Following in fourth place,
Zoe Sianis (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) earned her first PSAC-qualifying mark and career-best time at 1:00.30, moving up from eighth on KU's All-Time Top 10 List in the event to fifth. Also reaching a career-best,
Melanie Felkner (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) finished in 1:04.07, while Burke followed at 1:05.88, both qualifying for the finals in the event as well.
Qualifying for the finals in the 400-IM,
Kelli Sheatsley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) finished in 5:05.72 for ninth place.
In the 200-breast,
Natalie Carr (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) finished third in 2:35.12 to top the season-best time and qualify for the finals.
Two Golden Bears made it to the finals in the 100-back, and both earned career-best times in the event. Scialpi improved to finish in 1:05.02, while fellow freshman
Caitlyn Falguera (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) followed at 1:06.61.
The KU 'A' team of Scialpi, Carr, Bleiler, and Davies finished second in the 400-medley relay with a mark of 4:05.86. The Golden Bear 'B' team comprised of Falguera, Sheatsley, Felkner, and Metz came in ninth at 4:27.76.
The Golden Bears are currently in fourth place with 272 points, and not far behind Ramapo in third with 276 points. Washington & Lee leads with 602 points, followed by Franklin & Marshall (467) in second. Widener rounds out the top five at 257.
The meet continues tomorrow Sunday, Nov. 24, beginning preliminaries at 10 a.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m.
