LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Three different players scored as the Kutztown University women's soccer team applied pressure throughout and defeated Lock Haven University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game for its fifth shutout of the season.
The Golden Bears (7-3, 7-3 PSAC) extended their winning streak to six games with the victory, their longest since an eight-game streak in 2008. They have shutout five of their six opponents during the streak and have outscored the opposition an eye-opening 15-1.
Kutztown outshot Lock Haven 20-8 and notched its only-needed goal in the 31st minute.
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) scored her first goal of the season on a rebound following a shot by
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) that hit the crossbar.
Costello was involved in all three of Kutztown's goals. Early in the second half, Costello crossed the ball into the middle from the right side.
Logan Kramer (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor (Arkansas State)) received the cross and fired a shot into the upper corner of the goal from 12 yards out to give Kutztown the multi-goal advantage. Like Malanga's, it was Kramer's first goal of the season.
After generously putting two of her teammates in position to score, Kutztown's leading scorer used her extra energy to notch a goal of her own. In the 80th minute, Costello collected a loose ball in front of the Lock Haven net and scored from 10 yards out for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
In the last five games, Costello has scored two goals and dished out six assists.
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) tallied a pair of saves in the victory. For Lock Haven (3-5-1, 3-5-1), Dana Wozniak allowed two of Kutztown's three goals and suffered the loss in the setback.
With the win, Kutztown remains tied atop the PSAC standings with California (PA). Its winning streak is tied for the second longest active streak in the conference along with West Chester, trailing only California (PA)'s current seven-game winning streak.
Kutztown has the middle of the week off and travels to Mansfield University on Saturday, Oct. 12 for a PSAC game beginning at 1:30 p.m.
