Kutztown Overpowers Warriors, Moves into Second Place Tie in PSAC East

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown got a career-high 18 points from Advia Campbell (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) and Alyssa Bonenberger (Walnutport, PA/Northampton Area) turned in her third straight double-double as the Golden Bears fought off the Warriors 69-57 in PSAC East women's basketball action.
 
The win moved the Golden Bears to 9-6 on the year and their 7-4 record in the PSAC East has them tied for second within the division.
 
ESU held a 25-20 lead last in the first half, but Kutztown's Arianna Apostolopoulos (Yonkers, NY/Ursuline) scored all five of her points during a 12-3 run to close the half that put KU ahead 32-28.  Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) had 13 of her 15 points in the opening stanza.
 
A layup by Jessica Martin made it 36-33 with 16:57 to play, trimming the KU lead to three, but the Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) scored on Kutztown's next possession to spark a 14-4.  A jumper by Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) capped the run as the Golden Bears went ahead 50-37 with 10:55 to play.
 
Kutztown stretched its lead to 14 on a jumper by Bonenberger three minutes later, but a layup by Michelle Boggs and an Andrea Veres three pulled East Stroudsburg within nine at 56-47 with 5:52 remaining. 
 
A three-point play by Campbell, a pair of free throws by Bonenberger and an Aly York (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) jumper fueled a seven-point run that gave KU a 16-point advantage, 63-47, with 4:15 on the clock.  Kutztown eventually expanded its lead to as many as 18 after Bonenberger sank two more foul shots with 2:50 to play to make it 67-49.
 
Campbell hit 7-of-10 field goals and added seven rebounds, three assists, a block and two steals to her afternoon. 
 
Bonenberger scored 11 points and had a team-high 12 boards to go along with five assists.  Over her last three games, the junior is averaging 14 points and 15 rebounds.
 
Wood went 6-of-13 shooting, dished out five assists and was credited with four steals.
 
Kutztown shot 50 percent in the second half to finish the game at 45 percent as a team, while limiting the Warriors to just 33 percent shooting in the contest. 
 
Martin had 15 points and 15 rebounds for ESU.  Ryann Fiascki and Veres each had 11. 
 
The Warriors kept the game close by hitting 10-fo25 from three-point range (40 percent).
 
Kutztown answered East Stroudsburg's outside shooting with a 28-14 advantage on points in the paint.
 
The Golden Bears are back in action on Wednesday, January 23 at Cheyney.
