Golden Bears Prepare for Nationally Ranked Clash

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Coming off a record setting performance in which he eclipsed the school's career record for passing touchdowns, NCAA.com Division II Offensive  Player of the Week and senior Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) will try to keep the offense rolling against a tough No. 10 California (Pa.) squad. Kutztown enters the game ranked 11th by the American Football Coaches Association.

COMPLETE GAME NOTES

Morton finished the Saint Anselm game 31-of-45 for 406 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for another 33 yards on the ground with one touchdown as he accounted for seven of the team's eight scores.

The offense as a unit passed the previous record set a year ago against Saint Anselm for total yardage (697), racking up 723 yards. The Golden Bears scored early and often last week, scoring 35 points in the first quarter to pull away from the Hawks on their way to a 58-6 rout.

Lined up in the backfield with Morton this week will be senior Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) and junior Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge). Mastromatto had a strong season opener rushing for 68 yards on nine carries and hauling in seven passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. As for Wortham, the junior broke off an 81 yard touchdown on his way to 122 yards on the ground and two scores.

Through the air, four different receivers had at least four receptions. Senior Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) led the corps with seven receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Mastromatto made his seven catches out of the backfield and slot. Sophomore Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley) turned in a solid week one with five catches for 64 yards and freshman Matt Pirolli (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) had a coming out party making four catches and scoring his first collegiate touchdown.

The big men up front controlled the line all day, led by seniors Nick Maloney (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown), Aaron McGlynn (Harleysville/Souderton) and Chris Oliver (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown). This group is used to setting records as they have been together for three consecutive years for this high powered offense.

On the other side of the ball, the defense had an equally strong outing giving up just 136 total yards and six first downs on its way to allowing only six points.

Shutting down the air attack of the Hawks, sophomore English Peay (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) led the way with four tackles and one pass break-up, while freshman Cody Kelso (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora (Wagner)) recorded two tackles and his first interception in the Maroon and Gold. Senior Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) added a sense of veteran leadership, making four stops including one for a loss.

Out of the linebacker position, sophomore Sam Dixon-Dugan posted three tackles while senior Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) had two of his own, helping to stuff the running attack.

Junior Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) anchored a strong defensive line that tallied six tackles for loss and two sacks. Greenwald registered four tackles, two coming in the backfield for a combined loss of 12 yards with one sack. Junior Ian Smith (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) helped out, making four stops doubling his total from last year as a reserve.

As for the Vulcans, they opened last Thursday night with a win over No. 17 Hillsdale, 30-22. Under the direction on first year head coach Mike Kellar, Cal picked up its first win over a ranked opponent since the 2010 season.

In a game that went down to the wire, cornerback Rontez Miles broke up a pass that would have scored a touchdown with time expiring, lifting the Vulcans over the Chargers. The defense allowed 439 total yards with 165 coming on the ground.

Quarterback Peter Lalich who set a school record with 3,725 yards passing in 2011, threw for 276 yards and four scores against the Chargers. Receivers Mike Williams and Trey Johnson caught two touchdowns apiece and combined for a total of 12 receptions, while Williams led with 80 yards.
