Golden Bears Stopped by West Chester in Atlantic Region Championship

WEST LAWN, Pa. – In a rematch of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship Game, Kutztown faced West Chester in the championship of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional, with the Golden Rams taking down KU 6-0 to advance to the Division II Baseball Championships.
 
West Chester's Dylan Porter tossed a four-hit shutout, striking out seven to lead West Chester.
 
Trent Mertz (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) got the start for the Golden Bears and allowed four runs, just two earned, while striking out seven in 6.2 innings.
 
West Chester loaded the bases in the first inning and a bases loaded walk to Justin Lamborn gave the Golden Rams a 1-0 lead.  Matt Baer and Chris Pula had RBI singles in the second as West Chester stretched its lead to 3-0. 
 
After that, both Mertz and Porter cruised for several innings.  Mertz retired 10 of 13 Golden Rams before leaving the game in the seventh.  Porter, meanwhile, retired 11 straight at one point.
 
West Chester scored single runs in the seventh and eighth before a solo home run by Lamborn put the Golden Rams ahead 6-0.
 
Cody Montz (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven), Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown), Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and Corey Buletza (St. Clair, PA/Pottsville) (St. Clair, Pa./Pottsville) each had hits for the Golden Bears. 
 
Houck had KU's lone extra base hit of the day with a first inning double.
 
Lamborn had three hits and three runs batted in for West Chester.  Joe Wendle, Jack Provine and Josh Heyne had two hits apiece for the Golden Rams.
