KU Shuts Out Clarion in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Eight pitchers of the Kutztown University baseball team combined to throw 14 shutout innings against Clarion University to earn 4-0 and 6-0 victories in a non-conference doubleheader at Memorial Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (26-12) allowed just ten hits on the afternoon while racking up 21 of their own.  Four players had multi-hit games for KU as it also received some solid innings from its pitching staff.

Senior shortstop Cody Montz (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) batted 6-for-8 on the day with five RBI's.  He also stole a base in the second game to improve his season percentage to 16-for-16.  Fellow seniors Corey Buletza (St. Clair, PA/Pottsville) (St. Clair, Pa./Pottsville) and Brad Stoudt (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) each had strong outings in the nightcap with three-hit performances.

Junior right hander J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) opened the day with 4.2 innings of three-hit ball.  He retired six straight batters from the first through third innings as he struck out two Golden Eagles.  With the win, Seader improved to 2-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to under four (3.98).

“I think my biggest tool today was that I had a good mix of pitches working for me,” Seader said.  “I was able to keep the ball down and I hit all my spots.”

The lengthened outing Wednesday was another great sign for the 6-foot-3 pitcher.  After fighting his way through some tough spots in the beginning of the conference schedule, Seader has made the most of his trips to the mound.  In his last three appearances, he has thrown 11.2 innings and let up just one run with six strikeouts.  Most important, KU has won each of his last three starts.

“I know I was struggling early on, but today boosted my confidence a great deal,” Seader said.  “Knowing that I was having a tough time with my mechanics, I talked to the coaches and a couple of the players, and it really helped me out a lot.  I feel I've fixed the mechanical flaw I had, and it's made me a lot better in my last couple games.”

Stoudt put KU on the board in the second inning of the opener with an RBI to score freshman Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown), who doubled to left center to open the inning.

Montz knocked in the final three runs for KU.  His RBI single in the third gave KU a 2-0 advantage, and a two-out single in the seventh scored two runs to give KU some insurance.

Sophomore's Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) and Jason Henderson (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) closed the door for the Golden Bears.  Holmes allowed one hit in an inning of work.  Henderson relieved Holmes with two outs in the sixth to pick up his team-leading sixth save of the year.  Henderson faced the minimum four batters and struck out two.

Seth Peterson started for Clarion (11-25) in the opener.  He threw all seven innings and let up eight hits with three strikeouts.

Jon Kemmer was by far the top Golden Eagle on the day.  He went 5-for-5 at the plate including 2-for-2 in the opener.

Kutztown found its rhythm in the third inning of the nightcap.  Stoudt opened the inning with his team-leading fourth triple of the year.  Two batters later, Montz dropped down a bunt single to score Stoudt from third.

Stoudt also opened the fifth inning with a hit.  Brandon Hickey (Mountville, PA/Hempfield) (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) moved him over to second, and after a stolen base, Stoudt scored on an error by the Golden Eagle catcher.

Montz knocked in his fifth run of the day in the fifth inning with an RBI double to right center to score Brandon Shurr (Bernville, PA/Schuylkill Valley) (Bernville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley).

Stoudt also drove in a run in the sixth, as Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) and Buletza capped off the scoring for KU with RBI's in the seventh inning.

Freshman Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) went 2-for-4 for his fifth multi-hit game of the season.

Five pitchers combined to keep the Golden Eagles down in the final game of the twin bill.  Damon Valloreo (Vincentown, N.J./Burlington CCC) (Vincentown, NJ/Senaca) started for KU and picked up his second win of the season.  He allowed two hits through as many innings.

Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights), Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), and Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) each threw an inning of relief for KU and combined to face just one over the minimum in three innings of work.  Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) (Dauphin, Pa./Dauphin) finished the day for KU on the mound.  He pitched the sixth and seventh innings and let up three hits.

“Everybody threw real well today,” Seader commented on his fellow KU hurlers.  “With a big series against West Chester coming up, coach wanted to get everybody some work today.  The whole team hit their spots, and keeping the ball low was a major key in our success.”

Kutztown returns to action on Friday, Apr. 20 to face Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival West Chester in a road doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
