EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team led 7-0 in the opening game of Saturday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader against East Stroudsburg, but was unable to hang on to score the victory. It dropped the first game 8-7, but rebounded with a 7-6 victory in the nightcap at Mitterling Field.
The Golden Bears (24-12 overall, 9-7 PSAC East) entered the weekend ranked 25th in the latest
Collegiate Baseball Magazine national poll. With the split, the Warriors (23-15, 7-9) have now won six of their last eight meetings against KU.
Brad Stoudt (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) went 3-for-5 with five RBI's on the afternoon. He was 2-for-2 in the opener with a game-high three RBI's, two of which coming off a single in the first inning. He closed the series against ESU batting .500 (6-for-12) with seven RBI's.
Cody Montz (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven ) also went 3-for-5 at the plate Saturday. In the nightcap, the senior shortstop went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
Junior
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) had four hits with four runs scored in the two hole against the Warriors. Hauck led KU with seven hits and two doubles in the series against ESU.
KU opened the day with a six-run first inning. It plated five runs before recording an out as ESU pitcher Brian Ernst was pulled from the game before retiring a Golden Bear. Along with Stoudt, fellow senior
Corey Buletza (St. Clair, PA/Pottsville) (St. Clair, Pa./Pottsville) had an RBI single in the inning.
Matt Albaugh (Hatfield, PA/North Penn) (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and
Andrew Otterberg (Wall Township, N.J./Wall Township) (Wall Township, NJ/Wall Township) each walked with the bases loading in the first, as
Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) knocked in the final run of the inning to score Buletza.
Stoudt hit a sacrifice fly the following inning to score Hauck, who doubled to lead off the inning, as the KU lead grew to 7-0.
East Stroudsburg rallied on its home field for six runs in the bottom of the third. It tallied six hits in the inning off KU starter
Trent Mertz (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown). An infield error would eventually be the deterring factor in ESU scoring its runs. ESU loaded the bases with three straight hits to open the inning. The Warriors then hit three consecutive groundballs, but KU would only be able to convert them into two outs. ESU's final three runs of the inning came with two outs.
Mertz lasted four innings on the mound for KU. He allowed seven runs – two earned – while giving up nine hits.
Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) took over for Mertz in the fifth. After tying the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, ESU pulled off the comeback with a one-out RBI single by Nico Delerme to score Andy Brandstetter from second base.
Keenan Stare picked up his second win in as many days for the Warriors. He threw one inning of relief in the sixth and allowed one hit with a pair of walks.
KU again used the first two innings to score the majority of its runs in the second game of the twin bill. However, what would turn out to be one of KU's biggest at-bats was by Albaugh with a two run lead in the seventh. After Montz stole second, Albaugh drove him in to give KU a 7-4 lead.
The importance behind Albaugh's runs scoring hit was that with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Chris Knott hit a two run home run to bring the game within one. KU closer
Jason Henderson (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), however, ended the potential ESU comeback to help KU earn the split.
Albaugh also knocked in Montz in the first with a sacrifice fly to give KU its first run. Stoudt followed Albaugh with a two RBI triple to give KU a three run advantage. KU led 3-1 after one.
Back-to-back doubles by Hauck and
Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) accounted for three runs in the second inning for KU. ESU responded with three of their own in the bottom half of the second.
Sophomore
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) started the first conference game of his career in the nightcap. The left-hander threw 3.1 innings and allowed four runs – three earned – while striking out a pair. It was his third win of the season.
Third baseman Robert Patete had the only multi-hit game for the Warriors. ESU tallied ten hits to KU's seven.
Sunday's scheduled doubleheader against Clarion University on Sunday, Apr. 15 has been postponed with no makeup date announced. It returns to PSAC action on Friday, Apr. 20 for a doubleheader against nationally-ranked West Chester. First pitch at West Chester is set for 1 p.m.
