Kutztown Outlasts Mercyhurst, 5-4

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A three-set win by Kenny Beebe (Landenburg, Pa./Kennett) at sixth singles in the final match of the day lifted Kutztown University to a 5-4 win over Mercyhurst.

The lights at Keystone Courts were on by the time the match was completed as the competition between the Lakers and Golden Bears lasted nearly five hours. 
 
Beebe and Kamil Kepka of Mercyhurst battled for much of their match with the rest of the competition over and played the third set under the lights.  Kepka won the first set, but Beebe rebounded for the dramatic and decisive 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win.
 
The Golden Bears trailed 2-1 after doubles, but won four of the six singles matches to pick up the win.  Matthew Maguire (Centurion, South Africa/Tuks Sports School) and Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) (Allentown, Pa./Lake Brantley (Fla.)) teamed for an 8-0 win at second doubles over Eric Drusko and Mike Vinopal. 
 
Amin and Maguire both went undefeated on the afternoon with wins in singles play, as well.  Amin was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Jorn van der Veer at second singles.  Maguire was victorious at third singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mauricio Canton Diaz. 
 
Darren Krout (Gordonville, PA/Pequea Valley) (Gordonville, Pa./Pequea Valley) also won his singles match, taking down Vinopal at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Beebe and Krout had a close call at third singles, but Dylan Wiesner and Canton Diaz won a tie breaker for a 9-8 final.
 
Ben Nace (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) (Spring Grove, Pa./Delone Catholic) forced a third set, but Drusko held him off at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
 
Kutztown has a quick turnaround with Edinboro visiting the Golden Bears on April 14 at noon.
