Golden Bears Take Weekend Series over Bloomsburg with Pair of Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Senior's Cody Montz (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) and Brad Stoudt (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) of the Kutztown University baseball team enjoyed a sunny afternoon at the plate in Sunday's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader against Bloomsburg University.  They combined for six hits in the pair of games as KU picked up 5-4 and 6-1 victories at North Campus Field.

The Golden Bears (18-5 overall, 6-2 PSAC East) concluded their regular season series with the Huskies (11-11, 3-5) having won five of the six games including three of four in conference play.

Montz belted his second homer of the season in the opener.  With two outs and the game tied at one in the bottom of the second inning, he parked a three-run shot to left field to give KU the lead.  Corey Buletza (St. Clair, PA/Pottsville) (St. Clair, Pa./Pottsville) followed the homer with an infield single and would score from first on an RBI double by Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) the following at bat.

Houck's double was the 55th of his career, breaking the KU career record for doubles of 54 set by Mike Kacelowicz in 2010.  All three of his hits on the afternoon went for extra bases as he leads KU with 28 hits this season.

Bloomsburg responded with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to trail KU 5-3 heading into the seventh.  Freshman Connor Wing (West Chester, PA/Unionville) (West Chester, Pa./Unionville), this week's PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, was the third pitcher used for KU after relieving starter J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan).  He picked up the two inning save and gave KU a bit of a scare in the final inning.  Bloom hit three singles to load the bases with one out.  A sacrifice fly brought the KU lead to one, but Wing struck out the final batter to end the potential Huskie comeback.  He struck out four batters in his second save of the season.

Seader went 3.2 innings for the Golden Bears.  He struck out three batters and allowed six hits with a pair of runs.

Bloomsburg looked to take an early advantage in the nightcap with a first inning run to open the game.  However, it would be the last time a Huskie would cross the plate.  KU scored three runs in both the second and sixth innings to secure the victory.  Stoudt and Montz each had RBI hits to put KU on the board in the second.  Stoudt also had an RBI hit in the sixth, along with fellow senior Buletza.

Stoudt took advantage of his start in left field with a 3-for-3 outing in the nightcap.  He drove the ball hard to right field in all three plate appearances and flirted with a home run on numerous occasions.  He was a homer shy of hitting for the cycle while driving in two runs.  Younger brother Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) also had a multi-hit game, his coming in the opener.

Senior right hander Trent Mertz (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) kept the Huskie bats quiet in the second game.  He picked up his third win of the season with six innings of work on the mound.  He struck out seven batters and didn't allow a walk while surrendering eight hits.

Buletza combined for 4-for-5 at the plate in the twin bill and currently leads the team with an astonishing .550 batting average in KU's eight conference games.  He is also riding a nine game hitting streak.

Huskie sophomore Tim Ravel had a game-high three hits in the opener.  Casey Cooperman threw all six innings in the first game and struck out six batters with one walk.  Matt Kline started the nightcap and went five innings with as many strikeouts.  Four of his six allowed runs were earned.

Kutztown returns to action on Wednesday, Mar. 28 for a single game affair against Wilmington University.  First pitch at Wilmington is set for 3 p.m.
