Houck Sets Record as KU Sweeps Pair of Matchups

HAMPTON, Va. – Kutztown University senior Shayne Houck (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) became KU's all-time home run leader as the  baseball team stretched its winning streak to five on Saturday as it picked up a pair of victories at the Builder Invitational.

Houck broke John Rozich's 13-year old record of 37 with a two-run blast in the first game of the day against Briarcliffe.
 
Kutztown (6-2) opened the day with an early 17-6 win over Briarcliffe College at War Memorial Stadium.  Nearly 12 hours later, the Golden Bears closed out the long day with a 4-2 victory over Bloomsburg University.
 
With the pair of wins, KU moves to 4-0 through the first three days of the Builder Invite.  It moves onto the championship game tomorrow at 3 p.m. for a rematch with Bloomsburg.
 
In the opener against Briarcliffe (0-3), KU used the middle three innings to put the game out of reach and end the game after seven innings.  Two Golden Bears homered in the victory, each with its own memorable value.
 
In the sixth inning with KU up 12-6, freshman Travis Kreitz (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) homered to deep right center field, scoring junior Andrew Otterberg (Wall Township, N.J./Wall Township) (Wall Township, NJ/Wall Township).  It was Kreitz's first homer of his career.
 
Four batters later, Houck hit a two run homer to put him atop the KU leaderboard for career home runs.  It was the 38th of his career and third of the season.  
 
Kreitz and Houck each knocked in three RBI's against Briarcliffe.  Kreitz was 2-for-3 at the plate while Houck had a game high three hits in his four appearances.  As a team, KU tallied 14 hits and allowed just five.
 
Senior Corey Buletza (St. Clair, PA/Pottsville) (St. Clair, PA/Pottsville) had a game-high four RBI off two hits.  He had a pair of two RBI hits, coming in the fourth and fifth innings.  He leads the team with 11 RBI this season.
 
Freshman Karl Von Kiel (Macungie, PA/West Mount) (Macungie, PA/West Mount) got the start for KU.  He went three innings and left the game with a tied score at four apiece.  Picking up the win was sophomore Corey Snyder (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove) (Lincoln University, PA/Avon Grove).  It was his first win of the year in his second appearance.  He allowed two runs off as many hits in his three innings of work.  Junior Billy Felo (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin/Chesapeake College) (Dauphin, PA/Central Dauphin) finished out the game on the mound with two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
 
Sophomore Sean McCormick (West Chester, PA/Henderson) (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and freshman Ricky Gorrell (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) also had multi-hit games for KU.  They each went 2-for-4 at the plate as McCormick picked up a pair of RBI's.
 
Right fielder Sam Braverman led Briarcliffe with two hits in his three plate appearances.  Richard Ireland started for BC and was credited with the loss after four innings of work.  He allowed ten runs, seven of which were earned, and struck out three KU batters while walking four.
 
In the nightcap against Bloomsburg (2-2), KU posted a 2-1 advantage after the first inning and led for the rest of the game.  KU held the hitting advantage in a pitching battle that featured only ten total hits.  KU amounted six to BU's four.
 
KU walked the bases loaded in the opening inning to score its first run.  Freshman Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) hit a two-out RBI single through the left side to give KU the 2-1 lead after one. 
 
Junior's J.R. Seader (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway/ Maryland-Baltimore County) (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Tom Neely (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) each threw four innings while allowing two hits apiece.  Seader got the start for KU and was one inning away from qualifying for the win.  He let up one earned run and struck out two batters.  Nelly relieved Seader in the fifth and didn't allow a run in his four innings.  He struck out two Huskie batters. 
 
Bloomsburg tied the game at two in the top of the fourth after Paul Rosa scored when junior Todd Rubendall (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) threw out Bloom's Keith Meyer at second base.
 
KU responded with runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings to secure the victory.  Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) drove in both KU runs in the late innings.  He drove in Kreitz in the fourth and used an RBI single to score junior Cody Montz (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) (Schuylkill Valley, PA/Schuylkill Valley) in the sixth.
 
With the pair of wins, KU has its eyes set on the Builder Invite Championship on Sunday.  It had its six year championship streak snapped last season after losing to Lock Haven in the championship game, 8-4.
