HAMPTON, Va. – The Kutztown University baseball team scored six runs in the fifth inning for the second straight game as it rolled to a 10-4 victory over the Newport News Apprentice School in the second game of the Builder Invitational Friday afternoon.
Kutztown (4-2) racked up 13 hits in the win and allowed just six as a pair of KU hurlers let up just one earned run. The Apprentice School (1-2) scored in just one inning in the nine inning affair. It took seven innings for the Builders to get on the board as they put up all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior
Cody Montz (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) (Schuylkill Haven, PA/Schuylkill Haven) was one of four Golden Bears with a multi-hit game. He was 2-for-3 at the plate including a two run homer in the third inning. It was Montz's first homer of the year as the All-region performer is batting .350 through six games.
Fellow senior
Brad Stoudt (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Topton, PA/Brandywine Heights) connected on a two run double in the fifth inning for one of his two hits on the afternoon. He drove in freshman
Brandon Martinez (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), who went 2-for-3 at the plate. He had one RBI and was one of three Golden Bears with two runs scored.
Sophomore pitcher
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) picked up the win for KU with five innings of three hit ball. He didn't allow any runs and struck out five batters while walking two. It was his first pitching appearance of the season after appearing in three games last season with a 2.08 ERA.
Fellow sophomore
Colin Holmes (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) (Ewing, NJ/Ewing) relieved
Kyle Stoudt (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights) in the sixth and went the rest of the way for the Golden Bears. In his four innings on the mound, Holmes let up three hits and four runs, but only one was earned. He struck out four batters in his second appearance of the year.
Freshman
Brett Hauck (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) (Kutztown, PA/Kutztown) was 2-for-3 in his second start of the season. He had RBI singles in the second and fifth.
Senior Andrew Hooper led the Builders Friday with a three run double in the seventh. Trevin Wilson had the only multi hit game for the Apprentice School. The shortstop was 2-for-3 at the plate.
Kutztown returns to action on Saturday with a pair of games. KU opens the day against Briarcliffe College at 9 a.m., and then will play Bloomsburg in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
