Box Score EDINBORO, Pa. – The Golden Bears' attempt to come back in the second half fell short, and the No. 24 Kutztown University women's soccer team fell to Edinboro 2-1 in the PSAC Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.
A corner kick by Edinboro at the beginning of the first half gave the Fighting Scots the lead when Allyson Overly found the back of the net with an assist by Kelsey Knoll in the 12th minute, to score the first goal.
Holding the offensive advantage, the Fighting Scots' Jansen Hartmann found the back of the net from an assist by Jenna Madison to score the second goal for Edinboro in the 26th minute.
The Golden Bears took possession of the ball at the end of the first half with shots on goal by
Sam Costello (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose), but both were saved by the Fighting Scots' goalkeeper Meghan Kelly, and the teams went to halftime with Ediboro in the lead 2-0.
KU opened the second half with a pair of corner kicks and a shot by
Kim Nale (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee), and the Golden Bears found the back of the net in the 70th minute when
Hanna Fenstermacher (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) shot the ball from 15 yards out, sinking it into the lower left corner of the net to score the first goal for KU.
The goal was followed by an immediate shot on goal by KU's
Rae Carpenter (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts), saved by Kelly. The Golden Bears continued strong through the end of the period with additional shots on goal by Costello in the 80th minute and Malanga in the 86th minute, but both opportunities at scoring were deflected by Kelly.
The Golden Bears will await a potential bid to the NCAA Regional with a current record of 11-6-2 overall and 9-3-2 in the PSAC.
