Sarah Black (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and
BrieAnn Shipkowski (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) teamed up to give the Golden Bears an early lead, but California (Pa.) came from behind with a 2-1 win.
The Vulcans were immediately matched as they challenged the Kutztown defensive line in the opening of the first half of play.
Alina Rakiewicz (Denver, PA/Cocalico) made her first save of the game in the first five minutes of action, and the Vulcans were caught offside to turn the ball back over to the Golden Bears' offense.
Moments later, a corner kick by the Golden Bears' Shipkowski gave opportunity to Black for a header shot, scoring the first goal of the game for KU at 9:19.
The Golden Bears and the Vulcans struggled for the offensive advantage, each getting in their share of shots until the Vulcans' Bethany Smyda scored in the 29th minute with an assist from Kelsey Russo.
The Golden Bears had two more shots on goal by
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) and
Mariah Dimm (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), but both were saved by the Vulcans' goalkeeper Ashley Magruda to end the first half with a tie of 1-1.
Dimm opened the second half of play with a header, which was saved by Magruda, and the Vulcans' defensive line proceeded to catch KU offsides twice before taking back the offensive advantage.
A series of corner kicks by the Vulcans' Kayla Fransko kept the ball in KU's defensive spectrum. In the 64th minute the Vulcans' Russo found the back of the net to score the second goal for California (Pa.) with an assist from teammates Megan Politowski and Carley Work.
The game continued with the ball back and forth in either ends of the field, eventually running out the clock with the scoreboard reading 2-1 and California (Pa.) taking home the victory.
The Vulcans outshot the Golden Bears 18-11, and Rakiewicz had six saves to Magruda's five.
The Golden Bears return home on Friday, October 26, for a 2 p.m. kickoff against West Virginia Wesleyan at Keystone Field.
