Box Score KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Emily Labowitz (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion)'s second half goal was all that the Kutztown University field hockey team needed to get past No. 8 LIU Post on Saturday night at University field, 1-0.
Karly Waltman (Birdsboro, PA/Twin Valley) stood tall in net, registering seven saves in the winning effort.
The first half turned out to be a defensive struggle as both offenses could only register three shots apiece in the first 35 minutes of play as the scoreboard read 0-0 at half.
In the second frame, both offensive units picked up the intensity as a total of 22 shots were taken. In the 61st minute, the Golden Bears were awarded their seventh penalty corner of the evening.
After Labowitz put the ball in play,
Casey Washington (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown West) fired a shot which hit off of
Jenna Gregory (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg)'s stick and deflected right back to Labowitz who was there to tally the game's lone goal.
The Pioneers outshot the Maroon and Gold, 15-13, as Kutztown held an advantage in penalty corners, 9-5.
Picking up her fourth win of the season, Waltman made seven saves in front of the cage while LIU's Becca May made eight stops in the losing effort.
Tonight's game marked the seventh time this season that the Golden Bears have had a game decided by one goal. Of those seven matches, Kutztown has found its way to the win column four times.
Up next for Kutztown, it will travel to Bloomsburg on Wednesday (10/17) for a 4:00 p.m. contest and return home for Senior Day against West Chester next Saturday (10/20).
