Kutztown Drops Homecoming Game to No.16 Shippensburg

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Fans at Kutztown University's Homecoming game saw a record-setting passing showdown between the Golden Bears and No. 16 Shippensburg, unfortunately for KU, it was the Red Raiders coming out on top with a 73-35 win.

Kutztown's Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) set single game records for pass attempts, completions, and passing yards in the contests and also joined the exclusive club of 10,000 passing yards and 100 career touchdown passes.  He became just the 19th player in Division II history to reach both marks and only the 59 have done it in the history of college football at all divisions of NCAA football and the NAIA.  He finished the game 45-of-63 for 479 yards and three touchdowns.

Shippensburg, however, had record setting days for both quarterback Zach Zulli and receiver Trevor Harman.  Zulli tied the PSAC single-game record with nine touchdown passes while also setting school single-game records in each of the following statistics: 46 completions on 61 attempts for 581 yards passing (third-most in PSAC single-game history). Harman, meanwhile, set school single-game records with 18 catches, 288 yards receiving and five touchdown catches, with the receptions and touchdown marks tying PSAC single-game records.

The completion marks for Zulli and Morton are the second and third most in PSAC history.

Kutztown scored to open the fourth quarter on a 25 yard pass from Morton to Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) with 14:34 to play to pull within 10, 45-35.  Shippensburg would go on to score four touchdowns in the game's final 12:09 to put the Golden Bears away.

KU opened the scoring, going 59 yards on four plays to start the game.  Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) had a 30-yard rush to account for most of the yardage on the drive and scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns of the afternoon on a seven-yard scamper.

The Raiders answered back immediately with a 75-yard drive of their own to tie the game.  The series ended with a strike from Zulli to Harman from 13 yards out for the touchdown.

Shippensburg would score on each of its next four drives of the game and led 35-21 at halftime.  Zulli put SU ahead 14-7 with a touchdown strike to Jacob Baskerville, but KU tied things with 1:45 left in the first quarter when Morton found Justin Michalak (Dover, PA/Northeastern) for a five-yard score.

Harman scored his second touchdown of the game on the first play of the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown catch from Zulli for a 21-14 lead.

After a fake punt by Kutztown failed, the Raiders threw five straight passes with Baskerville scoring on a 22-yard catch for the 28-14 lead with 11:07 remaining.

Kutztown pulled within a touchdown after a 34-yard pass from Morton to Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) made it 28-21 with 8:39 left in the half. Harman caught another touchdown before the half on a six-yard pass from Zulli.

Neither team scored on its first possession of the second half, but Shippensburg struck first with a 91-yard drive capped by a 33-yard touchdown from Zulli to Harman for the 42-21 lead with 8:16 to go in the third.

A five-yard touchdown run by Wortham finished off Kutztown's next series as they remained within striking distance at 42-28 with 4:10 to go in the third.

After a 39-yard field by Michael Lloyd ended the third quarter scoring, Morton and Snyder connected on the first three plays of the fourth quarter, including a 25-yard touchdown that pulled Kutztown to within 45-35.

Zulli threw touchdowns to Harman before Baskerville hauled in back-to-back touchdowns.  Chris Lawshe finished the scoring with a six-yard run for the 73-35 final score.

Tuell had a big day receiving for KU with 12 catches for 167 yards and a touchdown.  Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) also reached double figures with 10 catches covering 47 yards.

In addition to the record-setting day by Harman, Baskerville hauled in four touchdowns on nine catches that went for 144 yards.

KU's Wortham led all rushers with 73 yards on 10 carries.

Sam Dixon-Dougan had 11 tackles for Kutztown.  Adam Goeringer (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) had a sack among his seven tackles on the afternoon.

Mike Goode led all players with 13 tackles for Shippensburg.  Avery Coleman made 11 tackles and intercepted two passes.  Jake Metz had two sacks and forced a pair of fumbles.
