Morton Sets Single Game Mark in Win over ESU

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown University's Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) set the school record for passing yards for the second straight week and the Golden Bears had three receivers top 100 yards for the first time since 1997 as KU picked up a 59-33 win over East Stroudsburg.

Just seven days removed from a 479-yard effort that set the school record for passing yards in a game, Morton threw for 490 yards and three scores.  He was nearly flawless going 35-of-42 (86 percent) with no interception.

Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia), Brett Fox (Laureldale, Pa./Muhlenburg) and Zach Snyder (Lititz, PA/Warwick) all benefited from Morton's record setting performance, eclipsing the century mark for receiving yards in the contest.  It was the first time since Terry Robertson, Anthony Browder and Chris Fraley did it against West Chester during the 1997 season that the Golden Bears had three receivers with as many yards.

Tuell hauled in nine catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.  Fox and Snyder had seven catches apiece, with Fox covering 118 yards, while Snyder accumulated 109.

KU also had five rushing touchdowns in the game.  Curtis Wortham (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) rushed for 92 yards on 12 carries and scored three times.  Shahaid Smith (Ridley, PA/Ridley), who also had four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown, rushed once for a four-yard score.  Morton also found paydirt in the game.

East Stroudsburg struck first, opening the game with a six-play, 74-yard drive capped by a 46-yard pass from Matt Soltes to Jon Schnarrs for a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the action.

A 47-yard kick return by Smith gave the Golden Bears the ball at midfield and after an ESU penalty, Morton hit Snyder for 38-yards.  Wortham rushed for the final two as KU knotted the score at 7-7.

The Warriors were forced to punt on their next possession, but after a Kutztown turnover, ESU remained in possession at the KU 10 yard line.  The Warriors had second and goal from the one, but Kutztown came up with a goal line stand.

Matt Connors (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) and Ian Smith (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) stopped K. Williams in the backfield for a two-yard loss and, on third down, Kyle Ueberroth (Cocalico, PA/Cocalico) and Tyrone Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) stopped Williams for no gain.  ESU was forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal, but still reclaimed the lead 10-7 with 6:01 to go in the first quarter.

Kutztown again answered quickly, scoring on its next drive.  Wortham rushed for 36 yards on the series, but it was Smith from four yards out to give KU the 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Wortham remained a major factor on the next series with a 37-yard run, but Morton was dialed in, as well, completing all five of his pass attempts, including a seven-yard scoring strike to Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) for a 21-10 lead with 10:37 to go in the half.

East Stroudsburg kicked field goals on each of its next two possessions, but each time Kutztown responded with a touchdown.  After a 28-yard kick by Taylor Groff, a 40-yard run by Wortham set up a 16-yard touchdown rush by Morton for a 28-13 lead.

Groff booted a 32-yarder on ESU's next offensive series to cut the Kutztown lead to 12, but back-to-back 21-yard passes to Snyder opened a drive that ended with Morton hitting Smith for the score from 29 yards and a 35-16 lead at the half.

Both teams punted to open the second half before Morton completed eight straight passes on an 11-play, 72-yard drive that ended with a one-yard plunge by Wortham for the 42-16 lead with 6:33 left in the third.

Another field goal by Groff cut the lead to 42-19, but Kutztown quickly struck back with a six-play, 70-yard drive that started with a 40-yard bomb to Fox and ended with Tuell hauling in a 13-yard score.  The senior's only touchdown of the game made it 49-19 with just 1:53 left in the first half.

Sam Dixon-Dougan forced a fumble on the first play of ESU's next series and Cody Kelso (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora (Wagner)) recovered at the Warrior 21 yard line.  Wortham later scored his final touchdown of the afternoon from three yards out for a 56-19 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Soltes hit Dusty Reed for a 10-yard touchdown to open the scoring in the fourth quarter and cut Kutztown's lead to 56-26.

Jack Ruggieri (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) was good from 39 yards out on his only field goal attempt of the afternoon as Kutztown went ahead 59-26 with 7:09 left in the game.

Reed caught another score from Soltes with 4:42 to play for the game's final score, making it 59-33.

Jeremy Tucker (Dover, NJ/Pope John XXIII Regional) made his first career start on defense and made a team-high eight tackles.  Dixon-Dougan and Matt Carroll had seven apiece.  Connors, Zach Greenwald (Gibbstown, N.J./Paulsboro) and Cory Darby (District Heights, MD/Wise) were each credited with a quarterback sack in the contest.

Soltes was the Warriors' primary weapon on the day.  He went 28-of-40 for 363 yards and three touchdowns and also led the team with 33 rush yards.

Robert Bleiler had eight catches for 75 yards in the game to lead ESU.

On defense, Anthony Singlar made 11 tackles to lead East Stroudsburg.

Kutztown outgained ESU 599-437 in the game.

The Golden Bears return home for Community Night on October 27 at 6:05 p.m. against Millersville.

Notes:  Morton ended the game with 111 touchdown passes, 10,675 passing yards and 11,354 yards of total offense…He passed Bob McLaughlin for third all-time in the PSAC in passing yardage…His total offense is now third all-time in the PSAC…Tuell is six yards short of 2,000 receiving yards in his career…He will be just the sixth player in school history to reach the milestone…With two more catches, he will also become just the fourth Golden Bear with 150 career receptions…Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) has 19 career touchdown catches, moving him into fifth place all-time at KU.
