KU downs Millersville 3-1

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (September 23, 2011) – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team defeated Millersville University 3-1 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division game, Friday evening at Keystone Arena. (BOXSCORE)

The Golden Bears improved to 12-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Marauders fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC East. Kutztown is 6-0 at Keystone Arena.

KU defeated MU by set scores of 25-18, 25-14, and 25-23. Kutztown dropped the second match 28-26.

Senior libero Lindsey Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) was up to her usual tactics of diving across Keystone Arena to keep plays alive for the Golden Bears. Smith's intense energy helped her finish with a team-high 20 digs.

“It's really exciting to keep the play going, especially when the other team thinks that it's down for a kill,” Smith said. “It is fun and it helps boost the morale on our team. To pick up a ball that maybe has dropped a few times before always helps with our liveliness. After plays like that, we usually go on a rally and get right back in the game.”

There were some instances when the Marauders tested the Golden Bears defense, but Smith was always in place to diminish MU's hopes of getting a point. Several Golden Bears recorded season-high stats against the Marauders.

Three Golden Bears finished with double-digit kills. Cali Snell (York, PA/York Suburban) recorded a season-high 15 kills, followed by Cait Hess (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) (12), and Erin Kissling (York, PA/Central York) (11).

Kimberlee Gomber (Washington, PA/Washington) recorded a season-high 28 assists. Dana Wright (Warminster, PA/Saint Basil Academy) who led the team in service aces with three, finished with 20 assists. Wright's three services aces against Millersville were a season-high.

As a team, KU finished with 11 team blocks and a season-high 54 kills.

“I thought there were long stretches tonight when we were very good,” Kutztown University volleyball coach John Gump said. “Our first and second tempo offense was really good. Our right sides and middles did a nice job blocking.”

Friday's win was a great way for KU to rebound after going 1-3 in its PSAC Crossover matches last week.

The Golden Bears will host Shippensburg University in a PSAC East contest, Sept. 24 at Keystone Arena. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

“This was a good win for us and we'll enjoy it for a bit,” Gump said. “We have to get ready to play a tough Shippensburg team tomorrow.”
