John Gump

John Gump completed his 24th year as head women’s volleyball coach at Kutztown University in 2021.
 
Gump is the winningest coach in KU volleyball history, amassing an overall record of 393-330 (.544).His Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) record stands at 153-184 (.454). He has a 604-443 (.577) record in 33 seasons as a head coach, ranking ninth amongst active Division II coaches in career victories entering the 2019 season.

In Gump's first 15 seasons at KU (1997-2011), the program won four PSAC East titles while compiling winning records in 13 of the 15 seasons. KU won 47 of 62 PSAC East matches from 2002 to 2007, including a perfect 10-0 in 2003. In 2011, KU won a school-record 13 PSAC East matches.

Kutztown hosted the PSAC Final Four in 2003 and 2005 and had the PSAC East Player of the Year from 2003-06.
 
Gump was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2006, and was the 2002-03 KU Women’s Athletics Coach of the Year.

From 1997-99, the team had three-straight 20-win seasons. The team was 20-10 in 1997 and won 23 matches in 1998 (23-8), the most wins in a season since 1984. KU was 7-3 in the PSAC East, marking its first trip to the PSAC semifinals since the early 1980s that season. Gump was named the 1998-99 KU Women’s Athletics Coach of the Year.
 
During his tenure at Kutztown, Gump has coached 47 All-PSAC East selections, including 17 who were named to the first team. His players have been named the PSAC East Player of the Year five times and the Rookie of the Year twice.

Additionally, Gump has guided five players to 13 all-region honors in program history (six AVCA, seven Daktronics/D2CCA), including eight first team selections. He has also had four players named to Academic All-District honors. He had one player, 2013 KU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Sarah Brandon, named an All-American in 2006.
 
Gump has coached on the collegiate level for the past 33 years. He had an outstanding tenure at Division III Allentown College (now DeSales University) from 1988-96. He was named conference coach of the year four times. He led the Centaurs to three conference titles and one appearance in the NCAA Tournament. He also has been head volleyball coach at Division I Lehigh University.
 
Gump served as Allentown’s sports information director from 1990-96. He developed and supervised the publicity and promotions effort for Allentown’s 13-sport program.
 
Gump graduated from Syracuse University in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism.
