Henninger's three-run homer helps KU sweep East Stroudsburg

East Stroudsburg, Pa. (April 14, 2011)—Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg)'s three-run homer in the sixth inning helped the Kutztown University softball team sweep East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest, Thursday afternoon at Zimbar Field. KU won the first game 4-1 and the second game 3-0.

The Golden Bears (35-10 overall, 9-5 PSAC East) capitalized in the sixth inning with Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) on second and third. With Henninger's big stick at the plate, Kutztown had no worries. Henninger who leads the team in homeruns (12), took a rip of the ball and put three runs on the board KU.

For those that don't know Henninger off the field, she is one of the sweetest people one may ever come across. But on the diamond, that sweet side is nowhere to be found. It's almost like she makes a total transformation and not a sense of intimidation or fear is on her face when she is batting.

Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) who pitches with confidence and composure, threw a one-hitter against ESU. The Warriors had their only hit in the fourth inning with Rachel Gieringer's single. Glomb faced 23 batters, struck out seven, and didn't allow any walks. Her outstanding efforts in the circle helped Kutztown record its 15th shutout of the season.

Hetzler, Isgro, Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick), Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) each had a hit in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Golden Bears did all its damage in the first four innings. With a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth, Isgro led off with her fifth homer of the season. Hetzler's single scored Heather Hannum (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) for KU's final run of the game.

Kutztown was led by Hetzler who was 3-for4 with a run and RBI. Hannum laso had a multi-hit game with two. She scored a run and had a RBI. Morgan Booth (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), Knipe, Tedjeske, and Isgro each had a hit.

The Golden Bears have been receiving some healthy contributions from its entire line up and as a team, they are batting .307.

Derr recorded the win for KU and had six strikeouts. She only allowed five hits and one run off 26 at-bats.

KU combined all of its forces Thursday afternoon and it translated to two well played games, defensively and offensively. If Kutztown keeps this momentum heading into Saturday's home doubleheader against West Chester (6-6, 25-15), it'll be in good shape.

The Golden Bears split with the Golden Rams earlier in the season and these games will help determine the final standings for the PSAC East. KU is currently behind Shippensburg who has a two-game advantage over Kutztown.

Saturday's doubleheader will also serve as Senior Day for seniors Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars) and Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill). The first game is scheduled to start at 1 pm at North Campus Field.
