Lead and they will follow: KU softball captains moving in the right direction (WITH VIDEO)

KUTZTOWN, PA. (March 31, 2011)—Most teams, organizations, successful businesses and companies are orchestrated by a group of leaders. These leaders have the ideal characteristics to guide its team or organization in the direction it should go. The captains of the Kutztown University women's softball team bring experience and versatility, which have helped their team to what has proven to be another successful season.

This week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action continues when Kutztown (27-6, 4-2 PSAC) travels to West Chester University (17-13, 3-3 PSAC) on Friday, April 1at 2:30 pm. KU will host Mansfield University(7-8, 0-4 PSAC) on Saturday, April 2 at 1 pm on North Campus Field.

Kutztown is led by the quartet of seniors Krista Tedjeske (Summerhill, PA/Forest Hill) and Monica Glomb (Mars, PA/Mars), along with juniors Nicole Colineri (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) and Heather Hannum (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham). They are a diverse group of young ladies who were brought together to complete a mission. The captains truly complement each other. While some of them lead with their voices, the others lead by example. Even in their roles as captains, they still continue to learn and grow as players and people.

Eight freshmen have been welcomed to the Golden Bears for the 2011 season. Culture and tradition is what KU prides itself on and the team as a whole has merged together to make Kutztown a dangerous weapon. The smooth transition has been very beneficial to KU who is looking to make its also ninth straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional and win 40 or more games for the fifth consecutive year. KU finished first in the PSAC Eastern Division and with all the accolades it received last season; it is ready for an encore presentation.

Experience has been valuable for the Golden Bears this season. Sophomore Brianna Knipe (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) who plays like a seasoned veteran leads her team with a .396 batting average. She leads KU in hits (36) and runs (19). Junior Nicole Henninger (Reading, PA./Muhlenberg) has been brilliant at the plate for Kutztown. Batting .389 and leading the team in home runs (9), Henninger's boastful bat has been clutch this year. Following KU's sweep of Felician College on Wednesday, she is currently on an 11-game hitting streak. Henninger is of eight Golden Bears who have 20 or more hits on the year.

The youthful energy of freshman Jackie Hetzler (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) has helped to a .378 batting average. Tedjeske, Katie Lynch (Willow Street, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg), Jennifer Stow (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley), Samantha Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick), and Maria Isgro (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) are all hitting above a .300.

Last season KU split with WCU. The Golden Bears won the first game 3-2, and dropped the second game 1-0.

In Wednesday's game against Millersville, WCU's Abby Block went 2-for-4 with a home run in the nightcap to help visiting West Chester salvage a split of its PSAC East doubleheader. The Golden Rams took the second game, 5-2, after falling 3-1 in the opener to. Kim Murl (8-7) went the distance in the second game, scattering eight hits over seven innings while allowing just two runs to score. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Erin MacNamee was 3-for-4 in the second game. MacNamee leads the Golden Rams with a .356 batting average.

Lock Haven staged two late inning rallies, twice overcoming late three- run Mansfield leads, to sweep a PSAC Central doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Lock Haven. Melissa Baer went the distance to take the loss for Mansfield. The senior gave up 10 hits and struck out four in six innings of work to fall to 2-3 on the season. Nicole Yost and Kaitlyn Harris each had two hits while Kaitlyn Kramer was 1-3 with a double and two RBI.

As a team the Mounties are hitting .268 and are led by Chara Dixon who has a .367 batting average.

The last time Kutztown faced Mansfield was in 2008 when KU swept the Mounties, 6-0 and 8-0.
