PHILADELPHIA (March 27, 2011) – Even though the Kutztown University men's tennis team won two of three doubles matches, the Golden Bears came up short in an exciting non-conference match, falling 5-4, to Philadelphia University at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears (5-3 overall) won at first and third doubles to take an early 2-1 advantage heading into the singles' matches. Winning for KU on the doubles side was Kaushik Das (Guwahati, Assam/National Open School) and Arijit Goswami (Kolkata, India/LSA Kolkata). They claimed a close 8-6 victory. Also prevailing on the doubles side for the Golden Bears were Rushi Amin (Orefield, PA/Lake Brantley) and Andrew Zhu (Toronto, ON/Northview). The duo claimed an 8-3 decision for Kutztown.
Amin also won his singles match at No. 3 by a score of 6-4, 7-5. Darren Krout (Gordonville, PA/Pequea Valley) claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory at sixth singles. The match came down to Das and Philadelphia's Adrian Torroella-Cruz. The overall match was tied at 4-4 as they battled each other. Das won the first set, 6-4. In the second set, he held a 6-3 advantage in the tiebreaker. However, it wasn't meant to be as Torroella-Cruz rallied to win the last two sets by 7-6 counts.
The Golden Bears return to action Thursday afternoon when they host East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
