KUTZTOWN, Pa. (March 19, 2011) – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener to East Stroudsburg, 14-6, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match at Keystone Field Saturday afternoon. (BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (3-2 overall, 0-2 PSAC) got goals from Rachel Mehaffey (Woodbury, NJ/West Deptford), Kelsey Hogan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), Jen Dunne (Chalfront, PA/Central Bucks South), Emily Solt (Bowmanstown, PA/Concord) 1, Leeann Pica (Levittown, PA/Neshaminy), and Kierstyn Mock (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown). Freshman keeper JoAnn McLaughlin (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape) made 12 saves for Kutztown. Meanwhile, ESU (3-3, 1-1) got three goals each from Michelle Mangiaruga and Christine Bradley.
Kutztown started strong against the Warriors. The Golden Bears held early leads of 2-1 following Solt's goal with 23 minutes, 13 seconds remaining, and 3-2 after Mehaffey scored with 18:26 left in the opening half. East Stroudsburg scored the last four goals of the first half to take a 6-3 lead.
Defensively, Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) and Hogan led Kutztown with six ground balls each. Mehaffey had a team high three caused turnovers. Vite and Marisa Kalodner (Havertown, PA/Haverford) also caused two turnovers each.
“We're a young team and we do a lot of nice things,” Kutztown head coach Sarah Greer said. “We just need to bring it all together and be consistent from start to finish.”
Kutztown continues its five-game home stand when it hosts Mercy College Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match starting at 4 p.m.
