KUTZTOWN, Pa. (February 25, 2011)— The Kutztown University men's basketball team will close its 2010-11 regular season when it hosts Millersville University Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division contest. Game starts at 3 p.m.
Fans that can't make it to Keystone Arena will be able to watch a live broadcast on KUTV, which is Service Electric Channel 24 and Hometown Utilicom Channel 28 in Kutztown and eastern Berks County.
Senior standouts Steve Coffey (Reading, PA/Wilson), Julius Gray (Lincoln University, PA/Oxford Area), and Tamir Johnson (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) will be honored and saluted for their efforts during their careers. They have helped enhanced the sterling reputation of Kutztown basketball.
The Golden Bears (15-10 overall, 8-5 PSAC East) used a fast start against the Marauders (10-14, 5-8 PSAC East) back on Jan. 29 to claim an 87-74 victory. KU scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed as Johnson made 12-of-15 shots and finished with a game-high 26 points.
Both Kutztown and Millersville will look to break two-game losing streaks. The Marauders are 1-10 away from Pucillo Gym this season.
Kutztown enters the game with some breathing room as it already captured a playoff spot last week. This is the ninth straight year that the Golden Bears are making a trip to the PSAC playoffs, which is the longest streak in the conference. Kutztown has appeared in the last two PSAC championship games.
Despite an 86-74 loss to Mansfield Wednesday night in its last outing, Kutztown is still in position to earn a home game as a No. 2 seed when the playoffs commence Tuesday night if it beats Millersville. The only way Kutztown opens up on the road is if it finishes in a three-way tie for second place with Cheyney and East Stroudsburg.
KU has used balanced efforts from its roster and Johnson has continued to be a huge advantage for Kutztown. He leads the team in scoring (16.2 points per game) and is ninth in the conference. Johnson is also sixth in the PSAC in rebounding (8.8). He has scored 20 or more points six times this season. Also averaging double figures in scoring are Nate Edwards (Philadelphia, PA/North Catholic) (12.7), Gray (11.3), and Eric Brennan (Chester, PA/West Catholic) (10.5). The Golden Bears are fourth in the PSAC in scoring offense (76.1).
Kutztown will have to play solid defense again against Millersville. In its last contest, KU forced Millersville into 3-for-17 shooting from 3-point distance. Mike Seibert finished with 17 points for the Marauders. Jaymes Miller led Millersville with 22 points and six rebounds. Bernard Brown tallied 10 points for MU.
Demond Vance leads Millersville in scoring (12.2). Also averaging double figures in points are Mike Holley (11.9) and Siebert (10.2). Holley is third in the PSAC in assists (4.1). In Millersville's last game against Shippensburg on Feb. 23, they placed four players in double digits but dropped a 75-69 loss to the Raiders. Jared Gembe scored 17 points and Mike Holley finished with 16 points for Millersville in the setback.
Kutztown has won the last five meetings against the Marauders.
