Kutztown's Second Half Surge Not Enough Against IUP

Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (December 10, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's basketball team fell to undefeated Indiana (Pa.) University, 66-47 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game earlier Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena.

The Golden Bears (3-8 overall, 2-4 PSAC) were led by Andrea Sisson (Richmond, VA/Godwin) (Richmond, VA/ Godwin) who finished with 12 points. This was her fifth consecutive game reaching double digits. Sisson has recorded double figures in scoring seven times throughout the season. She was 3-for-5 from the field and 3-point range and hit 3-of-4 free throws.

The Crimson Hawks (8-0 overall, 6-0 PSAC) placed three players in double digits in scoring. Sarah Pastorek recorded a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Ashley Stoner and Talen Watson each added 11 points.

Kutztown trailed 34-16 at halftime but rejuvenated its efforts and used a 7-1 run spanning over five minutes to slice IUP's lead to 43-36 with 10:19 left in the second half.

However, Indiana wouldn't let Kutztown get any closer and it controlled the rest of the game.

“We had a good stretch in the second half where we cut the lead down to seven,” Kutztown University head coach Janet Malouf said.  “We played with great energy in the stretch, but we couldn't maintain it.  We need to learn to play with that intensity for 40 minutes.”

Ashley Wood (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) (Limerick, PA/ Spring-Ford) chipped in nine points for KU. Steph Zewe (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) (Lewistown, PA/ Indian Valley) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

“I like this team,” Malouf said. “I think it's a good group and we have a lot of potential.  It's hard because I know how good we can be, but we're very young.  We just have to play from the opening tip to the final whistle the way we did for a good part of the second half today.”

Kutztown's next matchup is against Lincoln University. KU will host the Lions on Friday, Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
