KUTZTOWN, PA (June 9, 2010) -- Kutztown University left-handed senior pitcher Nathan Reed (Oley, PA/Oley Valley) was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 40th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday. (DRAFT VIDEO FROM MLB.COM)
Reed, who was the 1,212th selection overall, established himself as the ace on the mound for the Golden Bears by compiling a 6-4 record with a 2.60 ERA in 72.2 innings of work. Reed's ERA and batting average against (.164) led the conference and his 71 strikeouts are the seventh most. Reed threw a no-hitter against Bloomsburg in April and had a season-best 10 strikeouts in the Golden Bears win over Indiana (PA) in the conference tournament.
Reed threw eight scoreless innings against West Chester in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region championship contest. Reed struck out seven or more batters four times. He helped the KU baseball team win the Atlantic region and advance to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships in Cary (N.C.)
He was named to the PSAC East first team, Atlantic Region all-tournament team, NCBWA Atlantic Region second team, ABCA/Rawlings Atlantic Region second team, and Daktronics Atlantic Region first team.
He is the 12th Golden Bear to be selected in the MLB first-year player draft since 1997.
