KUTZTOWN, PA (April 15, 2010) – The Kutztown University men's tennis team advanced to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.The Golden Bears earned the No. 1 seed after beating Bloomsburg 7-2 in the division matchup. (BOXSCORE)
The Golden Bears (7-2 overall, 3-0 conference) and the Huskies played only singles matches on Thursday. Originally scheduled on Tuesday, the teams finished their double matches, with Kutztown sweeping3-,0 but darkness forced the postponement of the singles play until today.
In the No. 1 singles spot, Kaushik Das beat Ricky Dove 6-3, 6-4. Asok Mukherjee won against Lee Wexler 6-1, 6-4. Arpit Sharma won his No. 5 singles 7-6, 6-4 to Brandon Cummings.
But perhaps the most entertaining match of the day was over at the No. 2 singles court, where Jonathan Goulet and Fernando Perez battled all the way up to a “super tie-breaker.” Goulet went 5-7, 7-6, 1-0, and 10-7 for the win.
“What really helped us win today was Jon's four match points,” teammate Bobby Zerwick said. “He was down the first tie breaker, and came back to win. Then he was down in the super tie-breaker, and again came back to win. It was really exciting.”
“It was a great team effort today,” head coach Suresh Ramamurthi said. “They all played with a lot of heart. They played to win and hopefully they can carry that momentum to the PSAC playoffs and championship.”
With the win over Bloomsburg, Kutztown will make its 10th consecutive appearance at the PSAC playoffs. In the last 10 years, Kutztown has won eight championships (2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009)
The Golden Bears will resume play this weekend when they travel to Bloomsburg to play West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Queens College at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The playoffs will begin, at Bloomsburg, next week.
