CANTON, Ohio – Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) finished her phenomenal career by finishing second in the 200-yard breaststroke on the final day of the 2010 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium Saturday night. Jeppesen ended the meet by setting a school and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record of 2:15.11 in her signature event.
Â
Jeppesen broke West Chester's Katrin Dumitru PSAC record of 2:16.03, which she established in 2005. She lowered her previous school standard of 2:16.49 that she set three weeks at the PSAC championship meet.
Â
While Jeppesen was happy with her effort and earning another All-American honor, she was more thrilled that the Golden Bears finished tied for 16th overall with Lock Haven in the final team standings. Both teams had 65 points.
Â
"We were 21st last year with just me and to move up in the final standings is definitely something to write home about," Jeppesen said. "This has been the best year of my life and we were so much more of a family this year. I am so happy that I got a chance to finish my career at nationals with my teammates."
Â
Jeppesen set the tone for her squad with several super-fast swims that ended as a permanent part of the Kutztown record books. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Jeppesen had a quick start, but was edged at the finish. She was seeded first in the event entering the finals.
Â
"I came into the race, thinking I was going to win," Jeppesen said. "I got too excited and went out a little too fast. The girl that won the race, hung back and crept up from behind to win the race. I got second by so close so I can't be upset about that. Breaking the school and conference record was extra."
Â
Following that impressive effort, Jeppesen teamed with
Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin),
Allison Sheely (Enola, Pa./Trinity) and
Jordan Shapiro (Yardville, N.J./Princeton) to finish 22nd in the 400-yard free relay in a school record time of 3:33.66. That record lasted three weeks as the Golden Bear quartet broke the mark it established at the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships.
Â
Heather Wolkom (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven Regional ) joined the record-setting party by swimming 17:28.22, which erased
Alexandra Crigler's (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) short-lived mark of 17:28.65 that she established at the PSAC Championships. Wolkom finished 13th and Crigler placed 15th to earn honorable mention All-American status.
Â
The Golden Bears concluded a season to remember. They finished fourth at the PSAC Championships and rewrote nearly the entire women's swimming record book during the odyssey that started in October at Shippensburg and ended at the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Veteran coach
Tim Flannery was pretty pumped following the meet.
Â
"It was a great season," Flannery said. "The best in the history of the women's swimming program. This is a super-fast meet and to finish 16th is a big accomplishment."
