Long ball propels baseball team to win

MARS HILL, N.C. (March 10, 2010) - The No. 15 ranked Kutztown University baseball team used the long ball to take down Mars Hill 16-9 on Wednesday afternoon at Henderson Field. (Boxscore)

The ball was flying all over the place, with the Golden Bears (10-2) knocking five out of the park and the Lions had two of their own. Jared Frey and Matt Kulbacki had back-to-back home runs to start the fifth inning, while Shayne Houck belted a two-out solo shot in the first and went deep again in the sixth to left. James Quigley went yard in the seventh with two runners on base.

The Golden Bears had seven players with multiple hits and pounded out 20 total. Quigley went 4-for-5 with three RBI and Houck finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored. Frey had three hits and scored three runs.

In a six run seventh inning, Mike Kacelowicz swiped second and Corey Buletza took home on a perfectly executed double steal. The Golden Bears scored each of the runs with two outs on the board using a series of singles and capped it off with Quigley's homer.

On the mound, Jonathan Grosse (Bayport, NY/Bayport-Bluepoint) earned his first win for the Golden Bears. He pitched the first six innings, giving up 10 hits, seven runs and striking out two. Mike Bucklin (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) allowed two runs and struck out two in the final three innings.

The Golden Bears will head back to Pennsylvania with a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg on Friday and a home doubleheader Saturday to start conference play. Overall, KU went 5-2 on its trip through North Carolina.
