EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University football team continues to make history with each victory.
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin) ran for 90 yards and caught two touchdown passes to help the undefeated Kutztown University football team secure its first winning season since 2003 with a, 38-31, victory over East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest at Eiler-Martin Stadium Saturday afternoon.
This extends the football program's best start in school history. Kutztown has never started a season 6-0.
Kutztown (6-0 overall, 3-0 PSAC East) is the only unbeaten squad in the Eastern Division. KU and California are the only schools in the PSAC without a loss. Kutztown entered the game as one of 16 undefeated Division II teams.
"The kids did a nice job today and I am proud of the guys for hanging in there and winning the football game," Kutztown head football coach Raymond Monica said. "The kids are really playing well together as a team. I've been around long enough to realize it doesn't matter how many you win by just as long as it's a win."
Kutztown forced three turnovers and scored a pair of touchdowns within a three-minute span that bridged the third and fourth quarters to break the game open and hand ESU (1-5, 0-3) its fifth consecutive defeat.
Kutztown sophomore quarterback
Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) completed 19-of-27 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Mastromatto did a little of everything throughout the contest. He gained chunks of yards on the ground early, finished with a team-high six catches and picked up blitzing linebackers.
Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) caught three passes for a team-high 75 yards.
Defensively,
Jason Ulmer (Feasterville, PA/Neshaminy) led Kutztown with a season-high 11 tackles.
Greg Rotkowski (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) finished with nine tackles.
Jason Henshaw (West Chester, PA/Henderson), Billy McMonigle and
Alex DiNolfi (Norristown, PA/Norristown) all recovered fumbles for the Golden Bears, which held ESU to 94 rushing yards.
Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland, PA/North Schuykill) also had a sack for the sixth straight game.
"This is a great feeling to be 6-0 and to beat East Stroudsburg," Bolinsky said. "We don't have the best players, but we have the right players at every position. We're a very close team and that has made all the difference this year."
However, the Golden Bears had to survive a furious ESU rally. The Kutztown defense was under siege in the fourth quarter by ESU quarterback Matt Marshall, who was 37-for-57 for 382 yards and four touchdowns – including a 15-for-21, 185-yard, three-TD performance in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors scored the final 21 points to throw a scare into Kutztown after DiNolfi picked up an ESU lateral and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. DiNolfi's second fumble return for a score in three weeks gave Kutztown a 38-10 bulge.
Marshall threw a pair of scoring passes to Dusty Reed and one to Jeff Giglio to bring the Warriors within, 38-31, with 3:35 remaining.
It appeared as if ESU had recovered the ensuing on-side kick, but Kutztown had called a timeout just prior to the ball being kicked. On ESU's second on-side kick effort, McCormick recovered the ball at the Warrior 40-yard line.
Colby Tuell (Columbia, PA/Columbia) caught an 8-yard pass along the ESU sideline at the 29-yard line on third-and-7 with 2 minutes, 41 seconds remaining that resulted in a first down. Tuell's catch enabled the Golden Bears to run out the clock, finally exhale and celebrate their first victory over ESU since 2000.
Kutztown appeared to be headed for an easy triumph after it scored two third quarter touchdowns to extend its 17-10 halftime lead to 31-10.
The Golden Bears started the second half with a bang. On their first offensive play of the second half after KU almost fumbled the opening kickoff, Morton connected with McCormick, who turned the reception into a 59-yard gain. Three plays later, Mastromatto waltzed into the end zone with a 10-yard touchdown catch that swelled the Golden Bears lead to 24-10 with 12:58 remaining. Later in the third quarter,
Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown) expanded Kutztown's lead to 31-10 when he hauled in a 26-yard touchdown pass over the middle with 1:22 left.
Kutztown roared to a quick start by scoring touchdowns on its first two offensive possessions. Mastromatto took a swing pass 5 yards for the initial points of the contest. Following McMonigle's fumble recovery, Morton finished an 11-play, 85-yard drive by running untouched nine yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 Golden Bear advantage with 2:25 remaining. In the first quarter, KU gained 148 yards using an equal balance of 74 passing yards and 74 rushing yards.
Both teams continue PSAC East action next week. Kutztown hosts Millersville for homecoming at University Field beginning at 1:05 p.m. The KU-Millersville game will be broadcast live on KUTV. Meanwhile, East Stroudsburg travels to C.W. Post for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
