KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kevin Morton (Abington, PA/Abington) tied his career high by throwing four touchdown passes and the nationally-ranked Golden Bears tied a school record for wins in a season with a 38-28 victory over Millersville University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game Saturday afternoon before a packed house at University Field.
Kutztown (7-0 overall, 4-0 PSAC East) continues its best start in school history. Ranked 23rd in the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) Top 25 poll, the Golden Bears also joined the 1977 and 2000 teams as the only squads in 95 seasons of KU football to win at least seven games in a single season. Kutztown entered the game as one of nine unbeaten teams in Division II.
The Golden Bears, who have scored 30 or more points in eight straight games, is also 4-0 in the PSAC East for the first time in school history. Meanwhile, Millersville (2-5, 0-4) dropped its fourth consecutive contest.
"I am proud of the players to what they have accomplished to this point of the season," Kutztown University head coach Raymond Monica said. "Being 7-0 is great for what they've done and what the assistant coaches have done. It seems like each week, the team gets better and better. It also seems like somebody makes a play for us to win the game. The team is maturing."
The Golden Bears rode the right arm of Morton along with their fleet of wide receivers to delight the large homecoming crowd. Morton finished with 350 yards on 29-of-42 passing. His four touchdowns went to three different wide receivers:
Erik Frazier (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown),
Chris McCormick (West Chester/West Chester East) and
Josh Mastromatto (Fort Washington, PA/Upper Dublin). Morton has thrown at least one touchdown pass in the last 12 games.
McCormick led KU with a career-high 10 catches for 109 yards including a 37-yard touchdown reception that gave the Golden Bears the lead for good, 14-10 with 6 minutes, 8 seconds remaining in the first half. Frazier had nine catches for 67 yards, including a pair of second-half touchdowns.

Khalief Evans (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep Charter) energized the crowd with a pair of bone-crunching hits that knocked a Millersville's player helmet off on each tackle.
Kevin Bolinsky (Ashland, PA/North Schuykill) recorded a sack for the seventh straight game. He leads the PSAC with 9.5 sacks and upped his career total to 20, passing John Mobley, who finished his KU career with 19. Bolinsky is tied for third on the KU all-time sack list with Aldain Lobban and Harry Williams.
Kutztown withstood a barrage of catches from Millersville senior wide receiver Jamal Smith, who finished with nine receptions for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns that highlighted the Marauders' offensive effort. Millersville quarterback Bill Shirk finished with 235 passing yards and 50 rushing yards.
Both teams started the game with a bang.
Smith hauled in a 78-yard touchdown on the second play of the game, staking the Marauders to a 7-0 advantage 56 seconds into the contest. The Golden Bears immediately answered three plays later when Mastromatto caught a 39-yard scoring strike from Morton with 12:53 remaining in the first quarter.
"The kids didn't panic after they hit us with that quick score to start the game," Monica said. "They continue to stick together throughout the game no matters what happens because they realize it's a 60-minute game. The other thing I am proud about is after we got control of the game, we were able to get first downs and run out the clock."
Kutztown's defense came up huge on the Marauders next two possessions, limiting Millersville to three points after it drove inside the 20-yard each time. Millersville led 10-7 after the first quarter. The defensive stops allowed Kutztown's offense to find its rhythm. The Golden Bears scored 24 of the game's next 27 points to take control and open a comfortable 31-13 bulge with 10:06 remaining in the game.
With the win, Kutztown remained perfect in the PSAC East along with C.W. Post and Bloomsburg. The Golden Bears host C.W. Post in a first-place showdown next Saturday evening beginning at 6:05 p.m.
